A basic cloud virtual machine (VM) running an encoder continuously can cost about $18.50 in compute for a 30-day planning month, using Google Cloud’s published g1-small on-demand rate of $0.0257 an hour. That is a narrow compute-only example—not an all-in budget or proof that this VM can handle your chosen stream. Disk, other resources, taxes, support and redundancy can add costs. Google Cloud lists transfer from a VM to YouTube as no charge, so ordinary internet-egress rates should not automatically be applied to that specific route.
What the monthly estimate includes—and excludes
The arithmetic is $0.0257 per hour × 720 hours, where 720 hours is a 30-day planning month. The result is $18.504, or about $18.50, for the VM compute line item alone. Google Cloud notes that VM prices depend on region and zone, so check the configuration and current price for the location you plan to use on its General Purpose VM pricing page.
This estimate does not include disk storage, additional compute or networking resources, taxes, support, or a second VM for backup or failover. It is not a complete operating budget. A low hourly rate also does not establish that a particular VM can encode your content reliably.
First decide which streaming architecture you mean
One encoder sends a stream to YouTube
In the usual YouTube Live setup, an encoder on a cloud VM sends one source stream to YouTube. YouTube then handles delivery to viewers and says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. You are not sending a separate copy from your VM to every viewer, so do not multiply the encoder’s upload bitrate by the channel’s audience size to estimate VM-to-YouTube traffic.

Google Cloud’s network pricing page lists transfer from a VM to specified Google products, including YouTube, as no charge. That is a specific traffic route, not a promise that all VM internet egress, network use or related resources are free.
A service separately packages and delivers video to viewers
A managed streaming system that encodes, packages and distributes video directly to viewers has a different cost model. Viewer count and delivery traffic can become major cost inputs. For example, AWS estimates $69.74 for a one-hour 540p event with approximately 1,000 viewers: $2.50 for encoding and packaging plus $67.24 for CloudFront distribution of 791 GB under its stated assumptions. That is an illustrative event estimate, not the monthly cost of a YouTube encoder VM or a 24/7 YouTube channel. See AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS deployment estimate.

What determines whether the VM is suitable?
The compute example does not specify an encoder workload. The right VM size depends on the software and media pipeline, output profile, whether the program is still artwork with audio or includes motion, and the reliability you require. Test the actual setup before relying on a low-cost instance for a continuous channel.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. For H.264, its recommended video bitrates include 3 Mbps at 720p30 and 10 Mbps at 1080p30. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. These are YouTube encoder settings, not a complete server specification; consult its live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the profile you intend to use.

YouTube says it will automatically transcode a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers. Its guidance also recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. Neither transcoding nor the published bitrate recommendations show that a particular VM has enough capacity for your source, encoder settings or desired resilience.

- Compute: Use the $18.50 figure only as the 720-hour, g1-small compute example. Confirm regional pricing and whether the VM sustains your chosen encoding workload.
- Storage and other resources: Add the disk and any other billed resources your deployment needs; they are not included in that compute figure.
- Network route: For a Google Cloud VM sending its stream to YouTube, account for Google Cloud’s stated no-charge transfer on that route. Do not generalize it to unrelated internet traffic.
- Reliability: A single VM and a redundant setup are different budgets. If you add backup or failover capacity, count those resources separately.
- Region and current terms: Prices and network policies can change. Check the provider’s current pricing for your region and configuration before committing.
AWS Lightsail’s pricing page advertises bundle tiers from $7, but that headline alone does not establish which plan can support this encoder workload or provide a like-for-like comparison of included resources and transfer allowance. Treat it as a starting point to investigate, not evidence that it is the cheapest suitable option: AWS Lightsail pricing.

Common budgeting mistakes to avoid
- Calling compute the total: The 30-day estimate covers one VM’s compute line item only, not disk, other resources, taxes, support or redundancy.
- Charging the VM for every viewer: That confuses a single encoder-to-YouTube ingest with a separate viewer-distribution service.
