The electricity cost depends on the Chromebook’s measured average power draw at the wall and your local electricity rate. For a 30-day month, each average watt of continuous draw uses 0.72 kWh. Multiply the Chromebook setup’s measured watts by 0.72, then multiply by your price per kWh. That estimates electricity only—not internet service, equipment, or any streaming-service fee.
Calculate the Chromebook’s electricity cost
Use the power draw of the complete setup, including the Chromebook’s charger and any accessories that will stay on. A charger’s maximum wattage is not the same as the computer’s actual consumption. For a more accurate estimate, measure the running setup with a plug-in electricity usage monitor or another suitable meter. The U.S. Department of Energy explains the kWh calculation and describes measuring electricity use with meters: Energy Efficiency at Home.
- Measure the setup’s average draw in watts while it is doing the work you intend to stream.
- Calculate energy use: kWh = watts × operating hours ÷ 1,000.
- Calculate electricity cost: kWh × your local price per kWh, using the rate on your electricity bill.
For continuous operation, monthly kWh over 30 days is average watts × 0.72; annual kWh over 365 days is average watts × 8.76. As a hypothetical arithmetic example—not a measured or typical Chromebook result—10 W would use 7.2 kWh in 30 days and 87.6 kWh in 365 days. Multiply either figure by your own electricity rate to estimate cost.
Can an old Chromebook running Linux stream reliably 24/7?
There is no reliable yes-or-no answer without knowing the Chromebook model, how Linux is installed, the video workload, and the internet connection. Google’s Linux development environment for Chromebooks is a Debian environment, and Google documents that hardware acceleration, including GPU and video decode, is not supported there. That can matter when playback or encoding depends on hardware support. See Google’s Chromebook Linux setup and limitations.

OBS lists OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics and X11 or Wayland among its Linux requirements, but meeting those baseline requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream successfully. OBS says the demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Its system requirements page is dated August 25, 2021: OBS System Requirements.
Reduce the workload, then test the actual stream
If you try local streaming, start with a modest resolution and frame rate rather than assuming an old device can encode high-resolution video continuously. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates include 3 Mbps for 480p30, 4 Mbps for 720p30, and 5 Mbps for 1080p30. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 ingest options and recommends RTMP or RTMPS with constant bitrate encoding. Lower resolution and frame rate can reduce encoding and upload demands, but do not guarantee stability on a particular Chromebook or connection.

Before relying on the setup, test the intended content, audio, movement, encoder settings, and network for a meaningful period. YouTube advises: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Monitor stream health in Live Control Room during the test. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Plan for YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its help page does not promise automatic archiving for broadcasts longer than that. If you need a complete replay, plan shorter sessions and verify current Live Control Room behavior rather than assuming one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will create a complete video-on-demand archive. YouTube also lists Gyre in its encoder directory as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos. The directory listing does not establish current pricing or terms.
