Best Low-Power PCs for Running Prerecorded YouTube Streams 24/7

An N100 mini PC is a sensible starting point for one modest prerecorded YouTube stream, but processor TDP is not whole-system power. Learn what to compare, how to test, and when a cloud alternative may fit better.

For a single, modest prerecorded YouTube Live stream, an Intel N100 mini PC is a sensible low-power class to shortlist; consider an N305-class system when you need more processing headroom. Intel lists processor TDPs of 6 W for the N100 and 15 W for the Core i3-N305, but those figures are not measurements of a complete PC or its electricity use while streaming. Compare actual machines by their measured wall power, sustained thermals, encoder support, and network stability—not processor TDP alone.

What makes a low-power PC suitable for a 24/7 YouTube stream?

A PC running prerecorded video as a live stream must repeatedly read the footage, encode or pass it through in a format YouTube accepts, and send it over a stable internet connection. The right hardware depends on the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to stream, as well as the encoder software and operating system you choose.

YouTube lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 encoding options, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s bitrate guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, its table lists 3–8 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps with AV1 or HEVC, and a recommended 10 Mbps for H.264 at the same resolution and frame rate. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate table when configuring a stream; do not assume one bitrate suits every codec or setup.

Before buying, confirm that the complete PC and your selected encoder can produce the specific combination you need. A processor-class label does not establish that an individual mini PC can sustain a particular encode around the clock.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How do the N100 and N305 compare?

Processor class Processor TDP listed by Intel’s board specification When to shortlist it What the figure does not tell you
Intel N100 6 W A reasonable starting point for one modest streaming task. Whole-PC idle or streaming power, sustained thermals, or performance with your exact encoder settings.
Intel Core i3-N305 15 W Worth comparing when simultaneous workloads or more demanding settings call for additional headroom. Whole-PC idle or streaming power, sustained thermals, or performance with your exact encoder settings.

The TDP values are processor specifications, not measured consumption of a mini PC. RAM, storage, motherboard, fan, power adapter, and workload all affect what a complete system draws at the wall. They are not enough to calculate annual electricity costs or to claim that a particular computer will be reliable during continuous use.

How to choose a specific mini PC

The available evidence supports comparing processor classes, not naming a tested “best” model. For a real shortlist, compare the exact PCs you can buy on these points:

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Measured power: Look for independent wall-meter readings at idle and while encoding the workload you plan to run. Make sure the test concerns the exact configuration, not only its processor.
  • Sustained operation: Seek information about temperatures, fan behavior, and stability during extended runs. A low TDP alone does not establish multi-day reliability.
  • Encoder and output support: Check that the chosen operating system and encoder support your codec, resolution, and frame rate. Validate the settings in a sustained test with your actual footage.
  • Memory and storage: Confirm the configuration is sufficient for your encoder and that storage can be replaced if needed. Keep a separate local copy of footage that matters.
  • Network: Prefer a stable wired connection where practical. Test actual upload capacity and leave room for the primary stream, any backup stream, and 20%, as YouTube recommends.
  • Ownership costs and support: Compare current prices, warranty terms, seller support, and replacement options for the exact model. No model-specific price or verified continuous-run test is established here.

If you are searching for a fanless Windows mini PC, treat fanless operation as a preference to verify, not proof of suitability: confirm codec support and look for evidence about sustained behavior under your workload. A 2023 forum post asked for a fanless system below $250, but that dated question does not establish that the budget remains current or that fanless is the best choice.

Set up the stream and test it before relying on it

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. See its live-streaming setup guidance.
  2. Choose the output settings. Select an encoder and confirm its codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR setting, keyframe interval, and bitrate against YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.
  3. Connect the encoder to YouTube Live. Enter YouTube’s Live server URL and stream key in your encoder, then start sending content. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not control the stream.
  4. Check bandwidth and stream health. YouTube recommends testing your upload speed, allowing headroom for the primary and backup streams plus 20%, testing the setup before going live, and monitoring stream health. This is YouTube guidance, not a guarantee that a connection will work under every condition.
  5. Run a representative trial. Test your actual footage, settings, computer, and network for an extended period. Watch for dropped frames, connection interruptions, overheating, or encoder errors before treating the setup as suitable for unattended operation.
  6. End and archive deliberately. YouTube says to end an encoder stream by stopping content from the encoder; streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The guidance does not establish that a single longer uninterrupted stream will produce a complete archive. For longer broadcasts, plan suitable session lengths and keep a local recording if the footage matters.

Practical alternatives to keeping a PC on

StreamNeo: run the loop in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded prerecorded video live on YouTube without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It streams to YouTube only.

A dedicated prerecorded-media encoder

YouTube’s encoder documentation also describes the AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream as a device that can schedule prerecorded media and send it directly to YouTube Live without a computer. The cited material does not establish its current price, availability, power use, or value compared with a mini PC, so verify those details before considering it.

Common buying and setup problems

  • Using processor TDP as an electricity estimate: TDP is not a wall-power reading for the full PC. Look for a measured idle and encode result for the exact machine and workload.
  • Choosing settings the connection cannot sustain: Match bitrate to YouTube’s current codec-and-resolution guidance, test upload speed, and preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom for primary and backup streams plus 20%.
  • Assuming a stream key is harmless to share: It can let someone control your stream. Keep it private and replace it if it is exposed.
  • Expecting a complete archive from an arbitrarily long session: YouTube’s stated automatic archive rule covers streams under 12 hours. Use appropriately sized sessions and retain local footage when needed.
  • Buying on a low-power or fanless label alone: Neither label proves that the PC will sustain your desired encode. Check measured whole-system power and test extended operation with your own settings.

Copyright and channel-policy checks for prerecorded video

Before looping footage, confirm you have the rights and permissions needed to stream its video and audio. Do not treat prerecorded material as automatically safe to rebroadcast: music, clips, and other third-party content can still raise copyright issues. Review YouTube’s current rules and any rights-holder terms that apply to the material. Also consider whether a repetitive or minimally transformed stream complies with YouTube’s policies and any monetization requirements relevant to your channel; continuous availability by itself does not establish eligibility.
