For one prerecorded video that is already encoded and simply needs to be looped and sent to YouTube, 1–2 vCPU and 1–2 GB of RAM is a reasonable VPS starting estimate—not an official YouTube minimum or a guarantee. If the VPS must encode, resize, filter, composite scenes, or run multiple streams, benchmark that exact workload instead; it can need substantially more CPU and memory.
There is no universal VPS specification for a 24/7 YouTube stream. The key distinction is whether the server only transmits a prepared video or also produces the video stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies stream settings such as bitrate and resolution, not the CPU or RAM of the machine sending it.
Choose resources for the work the VPS will do
“Streaming” can describe two very different workloads. A server that reads an already encoded file, loops it, and transmits it does far less video processing than one that encodes or builds the picture in real time. The 1–2 vCPU and 1–2 GB RAM estimate applies only as a starting point for one simple prerecorded stream already encoded at its target settings. It is an editorial estimate, not an official requirement or tested benchmark.
| VPS workload | Planning guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| One prepared, already encoded video; FFmpeg mainly reads, loops, and sends it | Start by evaluating 1–2 vCPU and 1–2 GB RAM. | Confirm the command is not unexpectedly encoding. Monitor CPU and memory during a representative run, and check sustained CPU and transfer limits with the VPS provider. |
| One stream with software encoding, resizing, filters, overlays, or scene composition | No universal vCPU or RAM figure is established. Size it from a benchmark of the complete workload. | Test the exact resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder preset, filters, and audio. The CPU must encode in real time with headroom; allow additional RAM for production software and buffers. |
| Several simultaneous streams or outputs | Measure the combined workload rather than assuming resources scale linearly. | Test concurrency, CPU scheduling, memory use, and outgoing network capacity together. |
A nominal vCPU count does not guarantee sustained encoding speed: VPS providers may share or constrain CPU resources. A setup that works briefly may struggle under a long, representative run or when other services share the server.

Why encoding changes the CPU and RAM answer
Looping a prepared file
If the video already matches the format you intend to send, the VPS may mostly read the file and transmit its encoded audio and video. That is the case behind the modest starting estimate. Verify the actual FFmpeg command and process behavior: an option that triggers re-encoding, scaling, filtering, or compositing changes the workload.
Encoding or producing video on the VPS
Software encoding has to keep up with the stream’s frame rate. Resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder preset, and any filters all affect the load; there is no single defensible CPU figure without testing those settings together. Scene composition and overlays add production work, while multiple outputs add concurrent work. RAM needs also depend on the operating system, buffers, containers, and production software—not just on the video file.

For an encoding workload, test the exact configuration for long enough to reveal sustained performance. Confirm it stays real-time with CPU headroom, and check memory use rather than relying on a generic VPS tier label.
Check bandwidth and monthly transfer before choosing a plan
Compute is only one part of a 24/7 stream. The VPS needs a stable upstream connection and enough included outbound transfer for the selected bitrate. YouTube recommends testing the upload bitrate and advises checking stream health; its encoder guidance also recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrates, as recorded on October 3, 2026, are:
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 or 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 4K at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 4K at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
At a constant bitrate, one Mbps sent continuously amounts to roughly 324 GB over 30 days, before protocol overhead. For example, 10 Mbps is about 3.24 TB per 30 days; 14 Mbps is about 4.54 TB. These are arithmetic estimates based on bitrate and time, not YouTube-published transfer figures. Confirm how your VPS provider counts traffic and allow for overhead and reconnects.

YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewers, so the VPS generally produces the chosen input stream rather than a separate encode for each viewer. The server still has to reliably create and send that input at the selected settings.
Configure the stream and verify the real load
- Decide whether the file needs encoding. Check its codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio against the stream settings you plan to send. If you resize, filter, composite, or encode on the VPS, treat it as a processing workload, not simple file playback.
- Set the stream output. Choose a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate appropriate to the source and YouTube’s recommendations. YouTube’s settings page lists recommended ingestion bitrates; do not infer that a specific VPS can encode them without testing.
- Use a supported secure ingest connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its developer guide requires a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and port 443, with the documented SSL/TLS and hostname requirements. See Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.
- Run a representative test. Include audio and movement similar to the actual stream, then monitor sustained CPU, memory, network throughput, and YouTube’s stream-health messages. A still image or short idle test may not represent the real workload.
- Leave operational headroom. Do not size a server to sit at its limits during ordinary operation. Reserve capacity for buffering, reconnects, and any co-located services. For a continuous setup, process supervision and automatic restart are sensible operational practices, but neither guarantees uninterrupted service.
Plan for continuous operation, not just a successful start
The fact that a stream runs for 24 hours does not by itself increase its CPU requirement; encoding and production tasks determine compute needs. Long duration makes other constraints more important: provider transfer allowances, sustained CPU allocation, network reliability, monitoring, and recovery after a process or connection failure.

- Check the VPS plan’s sustained CPU terms, not only its advertised vCPU count.
- Confirm included monthly egress, overage charges, and whether the provider limits sustained traffic.
- Monitor CPU, memory, and outbound traffic while the actual stream is running.
- Use a supervisor or equivalent restart mechanism for the streaming process, and verify that it can recover from a failure.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and investigate warnings rather than treating a connected process as proof of a healthy broadcast.
When managed cloud streaming may fit better
If you do not want to maintain a VPS, YouTube’s verified encoder directory includes services described for continuous streaming, including Gyre for prerecorded videos and Upstream as a 24/7 live video cloud studio. Check each service’s current input workflow, resolution and frame-rate support, scheduling and recovery controls, storage, availability in your region, price, and account terms before choosing; those details can change.
For prerecorded YouTube streams, StreamNeo is another cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it also includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and UPI works for customers in India.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your video or playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded video streams at its quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
