For one video stream, a useful starting point is about 5 Mbps for 1080p HD and 15–20 Mbps for 4K. The exact recommendation depends on the service: Netflix and YouTube publish different figures. For a household, add the needs of streams playing at the same time, then account for other internet use and the speed your device actually receives.
Recommended speed for one stream
The figures below are service-specific recommendations, not universal minimums. Netflix describes its figures as recommended stable connection speeds; YouTube calls its figures approximate recommended sustained speeds. The services’ current help pages do not show publication dates, and their guidance may change.
| Quality | Netflix recommended stable connection | YouTube approximate sustained speed |
|---|---|---|
| 360p SD | Not listed on the cited Netflix help page | 0.7 Mbps |
| 480p SD | Not listed on the cited Netflix help page | 1.1 Mbps |
| 720p HD | 3 Mbps | 2.5 Mbps |
| 1080p Full HD | 5 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 4K UHD | 15 Mbps | 20 Mbps |
For 4K, YouTube also says a title needs a consistent download speed of at least 15 Mbps, while its general system-requirements table lists 20 Mbps. Use 15–20 Mbps per stream as a practical range, not a guarantee: the title, service, device, and playback conditions matter.
How to estimate bandwidth for your household
- Count simultaneous streams. Count what is likely to play at once, rather than the number of televisions or devices in the home.
- Apply the relevant service and quality figure to each stream. For example, two simultaneous 4K streams correspond to 30–40 Mbps using the Netflix and YouTube recommendations above. That is arithmetic based on those service figures, not a separate provider recommendation.
- Leave capacity for other activity. Video calls, downloads, games, and other household use compete for connection capacity. YouTube notes that when many people share a network, the speed available to one user may be limited. It does not prescribe a universal extra percentage, so there is no single official buffer to add.
- Check delivered speed where you watch. A plan’s advertised speed does not establish the speed reaching a television over Wi-Fi. Test near the viewing device and consider whether distance or interference is affecting the connection.
Is 100 Mbps enough for multiple TVs?
It depends on how many screens are streaming at once, their resolution, and what else the household is doing online. As an illustration, three simultaneous 4K streams map to 45–60 Mbps using the cited service recommendations; that arithmetic does not account for other activity or variation in delivered speed. A plan advertised as 100 Mbps therefore cannot guarantee a particular result at every device. Check the actual connection at the TVs and whether other users are active.

Why a fast plan may still look poor
Bandwidth is only one condition for high-quality playback. YouTube identifies connection speed, player or screen size, the original upload quality, and browser support as factors that can affect playback quality. Some high-quality formats may not be available on devices that lack support. A fast plan cannot make a low-quality source into 4K, or provide 4K if the title, app or browser, device, display, or playback conditions do not support it.
What to check if video buffers or drops resolution
- Test at the viewing device. A speed test on a phone beside the router may not reflect the connection at a television in another room.
- Reduce competing use temporarily. Pause large downloads or other high-bandwidth activity and see whether playback improves.
- Check Wi-Fi placement and interference. Distance from the router and interference can affect the speed available to the TV. YouTube’s TV troubleshooting guidance recommends moving the device nearer to the router and reducing interference where speed is low.
- Try a wired connection if practical. YouTube says a hardwired connection may help compared with wireless. This is an option when the TV or streaming device and router support it; it does not increase an ISP connection’s capacity.
- Check the title and device. Confirm that the video is available in the quality you expect and that the app, browser, device, and display support it.
These checks help distinguish a local Wi-Fi or playback issue from a connection-capacity problem. A cable, router move, or new plan is not a guaranteed fix; use the measured speed at the affected device to decide what to investigate next.
