Michael Jackson kept his three children largely out of public view by concealing their faces with masks and veils and limiting access around them. Paris Jackson later said he wanted people not to see what they looked like so the children could have a more normal childhood. Their appearance at his July 7, 2009, memorial was a highly visible public moment, although photographs had circulated shortly beforehand.
How Jackson kept his children from public view
A July 7, 2009, CBS/AP account described a combination of face coverings and restricted access: veils and party masks, as well as guarded gates and walls. The report portrayed the children as protected from public view for years, but did not document every outing or establish that they were always disguised. CBS/AP’s account of the memorial described Prince as 12, Paris as 11 and Blanket as 7 at the time.
A contemporaneous CNN broadcast transcript said the children were very rarely seen in public without masks. CNN labels the page a rush transcript, so it is best understood as a snapshot of the reporting at the time, not a complete record of their appearances. CNN’s July 9, 2009, transcript
This was protection of their faces and limits on press access, not concealment of the children’s existence. Reporting at the time discussed them as members of the Jackson family.

Why he used masks, according to Paris Jackson
Paris later described her father’s reason in an interview reported by ABC News on April 15, 2013. She said he “didn’t want anyone to see what we looked like” and that this gave the children “what he didn’t, which was a normal childhood.” This is Paris’s recollection of his motive, rather than a direct statement from Michael Jackson documented before his death. What changed after his death
Jackson died on June 25, 2009. At his public memorial on July 7, his children appeared together without masks. CBS/AP called it their first true public coming-out together as the youngest generation of the Jackson family, while also noting that photographs of their faces had leaked recently and circulated in the days after his death. The memorial was therefore a conspicuous live appearance, not necessarily the first time images of the children had reached the public.
In the days after his death, ABC News Australia republished a Reuters report describing the children as closely guarded from media and noting the masks and veils used over the years. The report also quoted Joe Jackson saying, “Michael’s children are our first priority.” That was a family statement about their care, not independent confirmation of private arrangements. In October 2009, Katherine Jackson denied that the children would appear in the reality series The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty. The Guardian reported her explanation that Michael would not have wanted them on a reality show, given his concern for their privacy. This records the family’s stated position at that time; it does not establish a blanket rule for every later media appearance. The Guardian’s October 2009 report
