How Matthieu Blazy Reworks Chanel’s House Codes for Spring/Summer 2026

For his first Chanel ready-to-wear collection, Matthieu Blazy kept the house codes visible while loosening their forms—from menswear-influenced tailoring to lighter tweed and a deliberately crushed 2.55 bag.

Matthieu Blazy’s first Chanel ready-to-wear collection keeps the house’s signatures recognizable while loosening their familiar forms: tailoring becomes slouchier, tweed lighter and more irregular, and the 2.55 bag appears deliberately creased. Presented at the Grand Palais on October 6, 2025, the Spring/Summer 2026 show paired those runway changes with a solar-system set. These are observations from runway coverage and reviews—not evidence that Chanel has permanently changed its codes or that specific looks are available to buy.

What Blazy changes—and what remains recognizable

The collection works by adjustment rather than erasure. Chanel’s codes are still visible in tweed, chain details, the camellia and the 2.55 bag; the reported difference lies in how those elements are cut, finished or presented. The Associated Press described the clothes as drawing on familiar house codes with a fresh look, quoting filmmaker Sofia Coppola: “There are things you recognize from the house codes, and a fresh new look at it.”

That distinction matters: the runway reports document garments and styling, while claims about their meaning are interpretations by reviewers. The show does not, by itself, establish a permanent direction for the house.

How the tailoring shifts toward menswear

The opening look, described by the Associated Press as an androgynous, slouchy pantsuit, set the tone: low-slung trousers paired with an asymmetric jacket with structured shoulders. Vogue France connects Blazy’s approach to Gabrielle Chanel’s use of utilitarian elements from the wardrobe of Boy Capel. ELLE, meanwhile, reads cropped proportions and a rolled sleeve as bringing the house’s masculine edge into the present.

Those are complementary readings, not proof of a single declared intention. The visible shift is from a conventionally polished suit toward a looser, boxier silhouette. Tailoring remains a recognizable Chanel language; its proportions and attitude are what reviewers identify as changed.

How tweed keeps its identity but changes in feel

Tweed is not new to Chanel. In this collection, reports describe it with lighter or less finished effects: Vogue France calls it relatively light, while ELLE notes a crochet-like jacket and hems that dissolve into fringe. The Associated Press describes interconnected tweeds in varied palettes and weaves.

The useful contrast is not “old tweed versus new tweed,” but conventional polish versus loosened texture and movement. Fraying, crochet-like surfaces and embroidery soften the expectation of a sharply tailored suit without making the material unrecognizable as tweed. These descriptions come from runway coverage; they are not a technical inventory of every fabric or finish.

Why the Charvet shirt carries a Chanel detail

Vogue France reports that Blazy developed square-cut button-down shirts with Charvet, the Paris shirtmaker, and added Chanel’s signature metal chain at the hem. The chain echoes the detail used to give Chanel jackets their drape. ELLE also identifies oversized Charvet shirts and relates them to Boy Capel.

The reported collaboration concerns these shirts; it does not mean the whole collection was made with Charvet. The design idea is a meeting of references: a shirt with a menswear inflection receives a discreet Chanel marker, while the chain’s familiar role is moved from jacket construction to the shirt hem.

What the crushed 2.55 bag suggests

Who What Wear quotes the show notes describing the 2.55 as “crashed, crushed, and cherished,” with its traditional burgundy leather lining exposed. The notes also describe crumpled camellias and frayed tweeds. The Associated Press reports chain-strap updates and other statement accessories, while Who What Wear notes new bag forms and reworked two-tone shoes.

The creased bag recasts a recognizable accessory as something lived with rather than pristine. That reading is reinforced by the show notes’ description of pieces as “Lived-in with the worn familiarity of the truly chic, items feel passed down and utilised.” This is a runway interpretation: the reporting does not establish the crushed version as a current retail item or verify its availability or authenticity on any marketplace.

Camellias, color and a cosmic stage

The Associated Press reports that camellias remain part of the collection’s visual vocabulary and describes a feathered skirt in the finale. The show took place beneath illuminated planets at the Grand Palais; Who What Wear quotes the show notes calling the staging “the Universe of Chanel.”

The set gives the debut theatrical scale, but it is distinct from the garment codes being reworked. A planetary backdrop can shape how a collection feels without itself being a clothing detail.

How to read the debut without overclaiming

For a careful comparison with earlier Chanel collections—or with Blazy’s work elsewhere—separate four questions:

  • Recognition: Is the house code still legible, as tweed, a chain or the 2.55 bag?
  • Transformation: Has the silhouette, surface or treatment changed, as with lower-slung trousers or frayed tweed?
  • Wearability and spectacle: Does an element read as an everyday garment, a runway statement, or both?
  • Evidence: Is a point a reported garment detail, or a reviewer’s interpretation of its meaning?

This framework helps distinguish what appeared on the runway from what critics infer about Blazy’s direction. The collection’s presentation date—October 6, 2025—is an event date, not a statistic about its impact or performance.
