Groundhog Day never gives a definitive total for how many times Phil Connors relives February 2. A frequently repeated estimate puts it at 12,395 days—about 33 years and 350 days—but that is a fan calculation built partly on assumptions, not a number stated in the movie.
What the movie itself tells us
The screenplay offers a few checkpoints without adding them up to a final count. When Phil first explains the loop to Rita, he says, “This is the third time.” Later, he tells her, “I’ve already been here for 211 days.” That establishes a minimum at that point in the story, not the total number of repetitions before the ending. The second-revision screenplay, dated January 7, 1992, does not settle the final tally.

The film shows selected days rather than every loop. The American Film Institute’s catalog entry notes that the original screenplay began after Phil had already been trapped for an indefinite period. It also records deleted scenes in which he bowls a perfect game, clears a pool table, and rescues a girl from a car—more glimpses of experiences accumulated across the loop, not a count of all its days.
The Library of Congress’s National Film Preservation Board describes the film’s time references and Phil’s transformation as “purposefully vague yet infinity-like.” The ambiguity is part of the story, so a precise-looking number should not be mistaken for a hidden answer in the film.

How the 12,395-day estimate is calculated
The Independent reports a WhatCulture calculation of 12,395 days, expressed as 33 years and 350 days. The calculation combines 38 days shown onscreen, 414 days mentioned, and 11,931 additional days inferred for Phil’s skill-building, including piano and ice sculpting. The Independent’s 2026 report attributes the calculation to WhatCulture.
The largest component—11,931 days—is inferred from how long Phil might need to develop those skills. It depends on assumptions about the time required and how much he practices each day. The accessible report does not state when WhatCulture first published the calculation, so 2026 is the date of The Independent’s report, not necessarily the date of the original estimate. The result is useful as one constructed answer, but it is not an official count.

What Harold Ramis and Danny Rubin said
Creator estimates also vary. A film essay reports that director and co-writer Harold Ramis initially estimated 10 years in the DVD commentary, then considered that too short. The essay quotes him saying it “had to be more like 30 or 40 years,” reasoning that it takes at least 10 years to get good at anything and accounting for Phil’s downtime and missteps.
The same essay quotes screenwriter Danny Rubin describing the intended span as “a hundred years. A lifetime.” These statements are reported through an essay that cites Ryan Gilbey’s 2003 BFI book and the DVD commentary; they are creators’ recollections, not a precise duration established by the film. The essay also reports disagreement over whether the original script specified 10,000 years: Rubin denied that this was his intention. Read the essay’s account of the duration speculations.
