Cousin!” after seeing an episode of the genealogy series Faces of America. Longoria recalled joking that Streep had the talent in the family, and Streep replying that Longoria had the beauty. She told the story on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on March 19, 2025.
What Longoria said happened
Longoria recounted that she had learned of a family connection with Streep through Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s PBS series Faces of America. At a later awards-show backstage encounter, she was hesitant to approach Streep because she did not know whether Streep had seen the episode.

According to Longoria, Streep called out, “Cousin! Cousin!” Longoria said she responded, “Clearly you got the talent in the family,” and Streep answered, “Clearly you got the beauty.” Longoria’s account was reported by E!; these are Longoria’s recollections, not statements independently attributed to Streep.
How the reported family connection was presented
Longoria said the connection came to light through Faces of America. PBS’s page for the 2010 episode “Know Thyself” confirms that both Streep and Longoria took part in the series, but its description identifies Streep and Mike Nichols as distant cousins, and Yo-Yo Ma and Longoria as cousins. It does not identify Streep and Longoria as the cousin pair. The cited accounts do not state a cousin degree or name a shared ancestor, so the specific relationship is best described as the one Longoria reported.
