Hell’s Kitchen is a real Manhattan neighborhood, but Marvel’s version is a crime-drama setting, not a documentary portrait. The name and some of the area’s history are real; Daredevil’s vigilante battles, criminal conspiracies and—in the 2015 television story—alien-battle destruction are fiction.
Where is the real Hell’s Kitchen?
Hell’s Kitchen is on Manhattan’s West Side. Its boundaries are approximate rather than legally fixed: a 2019 historical report from Manhattan Community Board 4 describes the area broadly as West 34th to West 57th Streets, between Eighth Avenue and the Hudson River. Other descriptions have drawn the lines differently, so the neighborhood name does not point to one universally agreed outline. Manhattan Community Board 4’s history of Hell’s Kitchen

The neighborhood has also been called the Middle West Side and Clinton. The name Clinton was promoted in efforts to improve the area’s reputation in the mid-to-late twentieth century; “Hell’s Kitchen” later came back into favor with newer residents. The name’s origin is uncertain. Community Board 4’s report says it was in use by 1891 and reports that a police sergeant was said to have coined it. The Intrepid Museum recounts a popular story about two policemen responding to a disturbance near West 39th Street and Tenth Avenue, but presents it as one of several versions, not settled fact. How did the real neighborhood change over time?
From rural land to an industrial waterfront
In the nineteenth century, the area changed from a rural landscape into dense city blocks. Railroads and freight, Hudson River docks, slaughterhouses, factories and tenements shaped local work and development. The result was a working-class neighborhood with difficult living conditions, not simply a backdrop defined by crime. Community Board 4’s history describes poverty and crime alongside immigrant communities, local services and efforts to improve residents’ lives.

#1 Best Overall
- One of Marvel Comics' most popular characters comes to the screen for the first time in this sci-fi action-thriller. Matthew Murdock (Ben Affleck) is a lawyer whose father, a prizefighter, was killed by gangsters when Murdock was just a boy. Since then, Murdock has devoted his life to bringing wrongdoers to justice and is willing to help others by taking on cases no other attorney will touch. Murd
Disinvestment, then gentrification
The Intrepid Museum’s account describes real-estate disinvestment and abandonment in the 1960s and 1970s, followed by gentrification in the 1980s. That history is more complicated than Marvel’s enduring image of a neighborhood under siege: the real place has gone through changing economic conditions and uses rather than remaining fixed in one era.
Today the neighborhood includes restaurants, theaters and residential blocks, as well as the Hudson waterfront. The Intrepid Museum, at Pier 86, identifies itself as being in Hell’s Kitchen and describes the area in relation to Broadway and Times Square. Its present-day visitor landmarks contrast with the industrial and ocean-liner history of the waterfront. Intrepid Museum, “Our Neighborhood”

The comics and character premise
Marvel’s official Daredevil profile presents Matt Murdock as a lawyer who protects Hell’s Kitchen as the masked hero Daredevil. In that fictional setting, crime, drugs and destruction are tied to Wilson Fisk’s illegal plans. The neighborhood provides a recognizable New York location for a story centered on a vigilante and his adversaries; it is not a report on the real community. Rank #2
- Idealistic lawyer Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), along with his long-time friend Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), uses his newly established firm to tackle the rising levels of criminal activity in New York City.
The 2015 television story
The 2015 screen adaptation adds a specific fictional backstory: Hell’s Kitchen has been devastated during the Avengers’ battle with aliens, and criminal interests seek to exploit the rebuilding. TIME described the series as closer to a crime drama or legal procedural than a conventional superhero spectacle. Those plot events belong to that adaptation; they are not part of the real neighborhood’s history. TIME, March 31, 2015
It is worth keeping the comics, the 2015 television story and the real neighborhood distinct. The stories can draw on a real place’s name, geography and reputation without sharing its full history—or depicting present-day life there.
