Super Bowl LIX averaged 127.7 million U.S. viewers across its full telecast, according to Nielsen’s February 11, 2025 estimate. The game was played on February 9, 2025, so the final figures answer the once-future question of how many people would watch: the headline number is an average audience, not the total number of unique people who tuned in.
What was Super Bowl LIX’s average audience?
Nielsen reported an average audience of 127.7 million viewers in the United States for the full telecast. Its table gives the more precise total as 127,713,000. Nielsen described it at the time as the largest audience for a Super Bowl and for a single-network telecast in U.S. television history. Nielsen’s February 11, 2025 release provides the estimate.
“Average audience” means the average number of people watching during a given minute across the broadcast. It is the most useful figure for answering how many people watched the game on average; it does not count every distinct person who watched any portion.
Why did Nielsen also report 191.1 million viewers?
On March 7, 2025, Nielsen reported that 191.1 million people watched at least one minute of Super Bowl LIX. That is a unique-reach measure: each person is counted once if they watched for at least a minute. It is not the game’s average audience, and it should not replace the 127.7 million figure when describing average viewership. Nielsen’s reach estimate used its Big Data + Panel Reach methodology, while its earlier 127.7 million announcement used Average Minute Audience based on its panel-only metric. What was the peak audience?
The largest quarter-hour average was 137.7 million viewers, from 8:00 to 8:15 p.m. Eastern Time during the second quarter. That is a high point within the telecast, not the full-game average and not a count of unique viewers. Nielsen’s audience release reports the peak alongside the full-game estimate.
How did LIX compare with the previous Super Bowl?
Nielsen’s table lists an average audience of 123,714,000 for Super Bowl LVIII and 127,713,000 for LIX, a reported year-over-year increase of 3.2%. This comparison is between average-audience figures, not unique reach or peak quarter-hour audiences.

There is a measurement qualification: Super Bowl LIX’s out-of-home measurement covered a broader area than earlier coverage. The Associated Press, in a report hosted by NFL.com, said the 2025 count included out-of-home viewing in all states except Hawaii and Alaska, compared with coverage of the top 44 media markets—about 65% of the country—in earlier years. It also described the use of smart-TV data alongside cable and satellite set-top-box data. The AP report provides that context. Consequently, year-over-year growth can reflect changes in measurement as well as changes in the audience.

Nielsen said its LIX estimate included out-of-home viewing, digital viewing on mobile devices and PCs, MVPD and vMVPD apps, streaming on Tubi, and FOX Sports and NFL digital properties, including NFL+. Its February 2025 release said out-of-home measurement covered 100% of the contiguous U.S. television population. These figures therefore describe Nielsen’s measured U.S. audience across the listed viewing modes, rather than only people watching a traditional television broadcast at home.

Later methodology changes also matter when comparing across years. Nielsen said Super Bowl LX in 2026 was the first Super Bowl reported using Big Data + Panel methodology, and identified LIX’s 127.7 million as the previous record. A sound comparison should match the measure—average audience, unique reach, or peak—and account for the geography, platform coverage, and Nielsen methodology used for each game. Nielsen’s Super Bowl LX release gives that later context.
