Toei Animation’s six named Dragon Ball anime series add up to 756 episodes if you count both Dragon Ball Z and its recut version, Dragon Ball Z Kai. Count the five other installments without adding Kai, and the total is 659 episodes. Separately, Toei reported 21 feature films in September 2024; it has not provided a single consolidated official count for specials and OVAs.
Episode counts for the six Dragon Ball series
The episode figures below come from Toei Animation catalog listings, except for Dragon Ball DAIMA, whose completed 20-episode run is confirmed in Toei’s FY2025.3 results presentation. The totals use Toei’s listed first-run figure for Kai, not every later international or home-video edition.
| Series | Episodes | Count basis |
|---|---|---|
| Dragon Ball | 153 | Toei catalog listing; Japanese broadcast, February 24, 1986–April 19, 1989. Toei Animation |
| Dragon Ball Z | 291 | Toei catalog listing; Japanese broadcast, April 26, 1989–January 31, 1996. Toei Animation |
| Dragon Ball GT | 64 | Toei catalog listing; Japanese broadcast, February 7, 1996–November 19, 1997. Toei Animation |
| Dragon Ball Z Kai | 97 | Toei catalog listing for its first Japanese broadcast, April 5, 2009–March 27, 2011. Toei Animation |
| Dragon Ball Super | 131 | Toei catalog listing; Japanese broadcast, July 5, 2015–March 25, 2018. Toei Animation |
| Dragon Ball DAIMA | 20 | Toei reports all episodes aired between October 2024 and February 2025. Toei Animation FY2025.3 results presentation |
Why there are two useful episode totals
Dragon Ball Z Kai is a revised presentation of Dragon Ball Z, rather than an additional sequel. It is nevertheless a distinct Toei catalog entry and can be watched as a separate version.
- 756 episodes: add all six catalog entries, including both Z (291) and first-run Kai (97).
- 659 episodes: add the other five entries once and leave out Kai, avoiding a double count of the Z story in two versions.
The Kai number is not universal across releases: Toei’s 97-episode listing describes its first Japanese broadcast, while later internationally distributed and “Final Chapters” editions have different episode counts. When comparing totals, say which edition you mean rather than treating 97 as the count for every version.

How many Dragon Ball movies are there?
Toei Animation Inc. reported 21 feature films in a press release dated September 24, 2024. That is a studio-reported franchise milestone as of that date, not a title-by-title filmography verified here or a guaranteed current count for October 2026. Toei’s statement does not establish that the number includes live-action adaptations. Toei Animation Inc., September 24, 2024
Specials and OVAs need their own counting rule
There is no single official consolidated total for Dragon Ball TV specials, OVAs, and promotional web animation in the cited Toei material. These are different release categories from numbered TV episodes and theatrical animated features, and totals can change depending on which standalone or promotional productions are included. Treat them as separate from both the 659/756 episode arithmetic and Toei’s dated feature-film figure unless you define exactly what you are counting.

What the totals do—and do not—tell you
Toei’s September 2024 release described DAIMA as the addition that brought the franchise to six episodic series, naming Dragon Ball, Z, GT, Kai, and Super alongside it. The six-entry arithmetic therefore answers a catalog-count question; it does not mean all six entries are separate continuities or that every film, special, and OVA has been included.
