How Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel’s Rivalry Changed Formula 1

Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel changed Formula 1 chiefly by turning the 2017 and 2018 seasons into a sustained, easy-to-understand duel between two four-time world champions driving for Mercedes and Ferrari. Their battles supplied weekly sporting drama, a clear team-versus-team storyline and a rare public example of elite rivals acknowledging mistakes and respect.

That is a change in how Formula 1 was experienced and narrated, not a proven increase in television audiences, revenue or rule-making. No official figure in the contemporary record isolates this rivalry’s effect on those institutional or commercial outcomes.

What “changed Formula 1” means in this rivalry

The phrase describes a shift in the sport’s public story during 2017 and 2018. Instead of a championship being explained mainly through machinery, team orders or a large field of contenders, each weekend could be framed around one direct question: would Hamilton’s Mercedes or Vettel’s Ferrari prevail?

Both drivers were established champions, so the contest carried immediate authority. It was not a newcomer challenging a fading star. It was a meeting of drivers with proven records, contrasting national profiles and the two most visible teams in the championship. Formula 1’s own 2017 coverage presented their connection as part of what made the title fight compelling.

The evidence does not demonstrate that the rivalry caused a measurable rise in viewership, sponsorship or income. It does show that the racing created a coherent season-long narrative, made sporting conduct part of the conversation and ended with unusually explicit mutual admiration.

Why the 2017 fight felt different

A champion-versus-champion starting point

Hamilton and Vettel had already intersected in the 2010 title picture, but Formula 1’s 2017 account noted that the earlier season did not become a sustained two-way showdown between them. The 2017 campaign did. Hamilton drove for Mercedes, Vettel for Ferrari, and their points battle gave every major race a recognizable central conflict.

When Formula 1 published its report on May 17, 2017, it described a historical snapshot of their stature since the start of 2007: 99 combined victories, 111 combined pole positions, 199 combined podiums and seven world championships. Those figures belong to that publication date; they are not current career totals. Their value is contextual: the championship leaders arrived with an unusually large body of achievement already behind them.

Spain: close racing as the product

The Spanish Grand Prix supplied the first defining image of the rivalry. Hamilton and Vettel fought closely on track, with Mercedes and Ferrari performance close enough for the drivers themselves to determine the story. Afterward, Hamilton called it “the rawest fight I can remember having for some real time, which I loved.” He added, “This is what the sport needs to be every single race for sure.”

Those comments matter because Hamilton connected the appeal of the championship to the quality of the contest itself. The race was not merely important because of points; it was valuable as a visible, understandable duel. That helped coverage move from technical explanation to sporting drama without pretending the cars were irrelevant.

Baku put the personal stakes on screen

What happened during the safety-car period

At the 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, Vettel drove alongside Hamilton during a safety-car period and struck Hamilton’s tyre. The incident was immediately legible to viewers: the championship leader believed the car ahead had slowed unexpectedly, while Vettel interpreted the moment differently and reacted alongside him. The contact made their relationship, not just their lap times, part of the news cycle.

Vettel’s apology and Hamilton’s response

At the Austrian Grand Prix FIA press conference, Vettel accepted responsibility in precise terms: “It was the wrong move, the wrong decision. It was the wrong move to drive alongside him and hit his tyre.” He said he had apologized.

Hamilton did not describe the incident as irrelevant. He said, “I still have the utmost respect for him as a driver and will continue to race him hard for the rest of the season in the same way I always have.” Vettel likewise said, “I think the respect that we have for each other on-track, off-track helps us in this regard.”

This exchange changed the meaning of the rivalry in two ways. First, it showed that a championship duel could include anger and accountability without becoming a permanent feud. Second, it made drivers’ conduct part of the sporting narrative. Hamilton said, “I think an intense battle is always a good thing for any sport,” but also noted that drivers serve as role models and should consider the message their behavior sends to young people.

The apology did not erase the collision or prove that both men experienced it identically. Its significance is narrower and clearer: Vettel acknowledged a mistake publicly, Hamilton affirmed that the competition would continue, and both described respect as compatible with hard racing.

2017 and 2018: two different kinds of title pressure

The two seasons formed one rivalry arc but did not unfold in exactly the same way. The comparison below keeps the drivers’ performance separate from the broader results of their teams.

Season Hamilton and team Vettel and team Defining sporting moment Championship outcome
2017 Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari Spanish Grand Prix wheel-to-wheel battle; Baku safety-car contact and subsequent apology Hamilton won the drivers’ championship
2018 Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari Hamilton’s Singapore victory extended his lead to 40 points; the fight remained a major season story before the finale Hamilton won the drivers’ championship; Mercedes also secured its fifth consecutive constructors’ title

2017: a contest built on proximity

The 2017 story depended on the leaders repeatedly appearing close enough for direct comparison. Spain gave viewers the clean sporting version of that idea; Baku supplied the volatile version. Hamilton ultimately won the title, but the season’s identity had already been shaped by the prospect of two champions meeting under pressure.

2018: the lead became a measurable turning point

The 2018 title remained a live narrative deep into the season. At the Singapore Grand Prix, the FIA reported that Hamilton won from pole and extended his championship lead over Vettel to 40 points. Vettel finished third. That result did not mathematically end the championship, but it made the competitive landscape substantially clearer and gave the season a concrete points-based pivot.

Hamilton’s championship victory in 2018 coincided with Mercedes’ fifth consecutive constructors’ championship, a team achievement recorded by Formula 1. The constructors’ result should not be attributed to the drivers’ rivalry alone: it reflects the performance of the entire Mercedes organization across the season.

How the rivalry changed Formula 1’s storytelling

It made the team divide instantly understandable

Mercedes versus Ferrari is one of the sport’s most recognizable institutional contrasts. With Hamilton and Vettel at the center, that contrast became personal without requiring viewers to choose between technical explanations. A car upgrade, a qualifying lap or a pit-stop decision could be understood through the larger question of which champion and which team were winning the year.

This was a narrative advantage, not proof that one driver single-handedly determined a team’s performance. Engineers, strategists and teammates remained decisive. The rivalry simply gave those developments a clear human frame.

It connected individual races to one continuous story

A championship can feel fragmented when every Grand Prix is treated as an isolated event. Hamilton and Vettel supplied continuity. The Spanish battle established the standard for close racing; Baku introduced a dispute over judgment and responsibility; Singapore turned the 2018 points table into a decisive talking point; Abu Dhabi provided a public conclusion. The same two names carried viewers from one weekend to the next.

It made sportsmanship a visible part of competition

Many rivalries are marketed through hostility. This one contained tension but also demonstrated repair. Vettel’s admission in Austria and the drivers’ insistence that respect could survive hard racing allowed Formula 1 to present intensity without requiring a permanent villain-and-hero script.

It gave the championship a cross-generational quality

Both men were experienced champions, yet their competitive identities were distinct. Hamilton represented Mercedes’ modern dominance and a methodical, highly visible pursuit of records. Vettel arrived as Ferrari’s title challenger, carrying the expectations attached to the most famous team in the sport. The meeting made the 2017 and 2018 seasons feel like a contest between established eras rather than a simple transfer of power.

What the rivalry did not prove

The available official reporting does not provide a controlled measure of how Hamilton and Vettel affected television ratings, attendance, digital engagement, sponsorship value or Formula 1 revenue. It also does not establish that their contest caused a sporting-regulation change. Claims that the rivalry “saved” the sport, permanently expanded its audience or directly altered governance go beyond the evidence.

A careful conclusion is stronger: the rivalry changed the presentation and lived experience of those seasons. It made the title fight easier to follow, gave race reports a dependable dramatic structure and placed professional conduct under scrutiny. Those are meaningful effects even when they cannot be converted into a single business statistic.

Abu Dhabi 2018: competition ending in recognition

The 2018 Abu Dhabi finale supplied the clearest public statement of how the relationship had evolved. After Hamilton secured the championship, he said, “It’s been a real honour and a privilege racing against Sebastian.” He described Vettel as honest and hard-working and said Vettel had raced his heart out.

Vettel answered, “Well he’s the champion and he deserves to be the champion.” He added that he had tried until the last lap. The exchange did not rewrite the season’s difficult moments; it placed them in a larger sporting context in which one driver could acknowledge the other’s achievement immediately after losing the title.

For Formula 1 coverage, this created an ending different from a feud that requires one final provocation. The final image was not friendship in the broad personal sense, but professional recognition earned through a demanding season.

How Vettel later defined Hamilton’s importance

In a 2022 Formula 1 retrospective published around Vettel’s retirement, he was asked to identify the toughest rival of his career. His answer was: “Lewis, especially when I was at Ferrari. Lewis has always been right up there. Before that, it was probably Fernando [Alonso] when he was at Ferrari.”

That is Vettel’s retrospective assessment, not an objective ranking of every driver he faced. It nevertheless gives the rivalry a durable endpoint. Years after the title contests, Vettel still singled out Hamilton’s Ferrari-era opposition as the benchmark for difficulty.

Combined with the Abu Dhabi comments, the statement shows why the rivalry lasted as a story after the points had been settled. The men had competed fiercely, experienced a public rupture, acknowledged responsibility and continued to describe one another in admiring terms.

The lasting lesson for Formula 1

Hamilton and Vettel did not change Formula 1 by themselves, and the record does not justify claiming that they transformed its economics or rules. They changed what a championship season could feel like to follow. In 2017 and 2018, a viewer could understand the stakes through two champions, two historic teams and a sequence of races that moved naturally from close combat to controversy, pressure and respect.

The most durable lesson is that rivalry does not need to be reduced to personal animosity. The Spanish Grand Prix showed why close racing attracts attention. Baku showed how quickly judgment and responsibility can become part of the sporting product. Singapore demonstrated how a points margin can turn narrative momentum. Abu Dhabi showed that acknowledging an opponent can be as memorable as defeating one.

That combination—competitive clarity, emotional risk and public respect—is the real way Hamilton and Vettel changed Formula 1’s story.
