Joaquin Phoenix lost 52 pounds while preparing to play Arthur Fleck in Joker (2019), according to his 2019 comments and contemporaneous reporting. He has described a highly restrictive, doctor-advised diet—not a publicly documented meal plan—and said the process affected him psychologically. His account is a record of an extreme role transformation, not a safe or general-purpose weight-loss method.
How much weight did Joaquin Phoenix lose for Joker?
Phoenix lost 52 pounds for the role. He discussed the transformation in a September 30, 2019 interview with the Associated Press, and Vanity Fair also reported the figure that year. The Associated Press interview, republished by CityNews Toronto, is a first-person account; the number describes Phoenix’s preparation, not a recommended target for anyone else.
What diet did Phoenix follow?
Phoenix has not provided a detailed regimen. Vanity Fair reported in 2019 that his diet was extremely restrictive and advised by the same doctor who had helped him lose weight for The Master. In a 2024 discussion, Phoenix said he had eaten mostly lettuce and steamed vegetables for the original Joker, and that he had worked with a doctor. He declined to give specifics, saying, “I’m not going to talk through specifics of the diet,” as The Guardian reported on September 4, 2024.
The accounts establish the broad approach and medical involvement, but not exact calories, a full daily menu, or how long Phoenix followed the diet. Those details should not be guessed from his description of a few foods.

Why did Arthur Fleck look so thin?
Director Todd Phillips wanted Arthur to appear “wolf-like and malnourished and hungry,” according to TheWrap’s September 26, 2019 report. Phillips said he and Phoenix had not set a numerical weight-loss target before the process began; the 52-pound total was recognized afterward. The physical transformation served the character’s appearance rather than a predetermined scale number.
How did the weight loss affect Phoenix?
Phoenix described hunger, vulnerability, and growing attention to tiny changes on the scale. In the 2019 Associated Press interview, he gave 0.3 pounds as an example of a daily fluctuation he became preoccupied with and said, “you really develop like a disorder.” He also said the change affected his movement: “I felt like I could move my body in ways that I hadn’t been able to before.” These comments describe his own experience; they are not evidence that restrictive dieting produces the same effects for others.
