The landmarks can be strikingly recognizable; the distances, street layout and surrounding towns have been adapted for the game.
What does Fallout 4’s Commonwealth represent?
The game’s setting reaches well beyond Boston proper. Xbox Wire describes the Commonwealth as encompassing present-day Massachusetts, including places such as Concord, Lexington and Cambridge. In practice, it is a game world built from regional references, not a faithful reproduction of the entire state or a navigable street map.

That distinction is useful when comparing the two: a landmark may clearly represent a real site even when its in-game neighbors, scale or route do not match the real geography.
Which Boston landmarks are recognizable?
| In Fallout 4 | Real-world reference | How the match works |
|---|---|---|
| Diamond City | Fenway Park | The settlement occupies the ruined ballpark. Xbox Wire points to Fenway’s Green Monster and light towers as recognizable features; Tech Times notes that the game’s residents maintain the wall’s green paint. The stadium is a landmark inspiration transformed into a settlement, not a recreation of an active ballpark. Xbox Wire; Tech Times |
| Old North Church | Old North Church, Boston | The real church is a game destination and a recognizable historic reference. Xbox Wire connects it with Paul Revere’s lantern signal; the National Park Service also marks the church on its Boston historic-sites map. Xbox Wire; National Park Service map |
| Boston Common | Boston Common and the nearby Public Garden | The real places are distinct, but a 2015 Tech Times comparison says the game squeezes them together into a much smaller combined area. The game preserves the general reference, not the actual park boundaries or scale. Tech Times |
| Massachusetts State House | Massachusetts State House, Beacon Hill | Xbox Wire identifies the State House as an in-game landmark, and the NPS map marks the real building. Its presence helps establish the historic Boston setting, but does not mean the surrounding streets are laid out accurately. Xbox Wire; National Park Service map |
| The Institute and nearby square | Cambridge and MIT; the square has been compared with Harvard Square | Xbox Wire links the fictional Institute with Cambridge and MIT. Tech Times observes a resemblance between an in-game square and Harvard Square/Cambridge Square. These are regional and visual associations, not evidence that the game reproduces Cambridge as a whole. Xbox Wire; Tech Times |
| Salem Museum of Witchcraft | Salem Witch Museum and Salem | Tech Times describes the in-game museum building as a close analogue of the real museum. The broader town is much more compressed than Salem in Massachusetts. Tech Times |
| USS Constitution | USS Constitution, Charlestown Navy Yard | The real ship is at the Navy Yard, as shown on the NPS map. The game uses the ship as a destination but changes its setting dramatically; Tech Times describes its elevated in-game position. It is a conspicuous adaptation, not a guide to the real ship’s location. Xbox Wire; Tech Times; National Park Service map |
| Faneuil Hall | Faneuil Hall and the surrounding historic marketplace area | Tech Times says the game reduces the reference to a single building, whereas the real-world name is commonly associated with a larger area. The NPS map marks the real historic site. Tech Times; National Park Service map |
How much smaller or rearranged is the game map?
Fallout 4 compresses the city and surrounding places so recognizable destinations can share a playable world. The 2015 Tech Times comparison describes Boston Common and the Public Garden as merged into a smaller footprint, Faneuil Hall as reduced to one building, and Malden and Salem as far smaller in the game than in real life.

Those are qualitative comparisons, not a measured game-to-real-world scale. The reviewed sources do not establish a reliable distance conversion, so it would be misleading to use the game to estimate how far apart real Boston destinations are or how long a real-world walk will take.
What changes beyond the map?
The visual references are adapted as well as relocated or compressed. Tech Times notes that the skyline differs from Boston’s and that some buildings are missing or difficult to recognize. The USS Constitution’s unusual elevated position is another clear example of a real landmark reimagined for the fictional setting.

Fenway illustrates the other side of the approach: distinctive elements such as the Green Monster and light towers remain recognizable even though the park has become post-apocalyptic Diamond City. A recognizable feature signals the inspiration; it does not guarantee the surrounding architecture or history is reproduced exactly.

For real locations and visitor navigation, use the National Park Service’s Boston resources rather than the game map. Its Boston National Historical Park map marks sites including Boston Common, Old North Church, Faneuil Hall, the State House and USS Constitution, and shows the Freedom Trail and Black Heritage Trail. The NPS maps and directions page, last updated February 19, 2025, also points visitors to downloadable maps and the NPS app.
