Statham later described escaping from the sinking vehicle; the precise distances and escape details differ between the two retellings.
What happened during the filming of The Expendables 3?
The incident was reported as taking place while the 2014 action film was being made at a dock on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast. In a 2014 report, the Irish Independent relayed Sylvester Stallone’s account: Statham was test-driving a three-tonne truck when its brakes “ran out,” sending it into the sea. The same report says Stallone described the truck going about 60 feet into the water.
Statham’s own account was relayed years later by LADbible, which reported on his 2014 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Statham said he tested the brakes, but the truck did not stop where it was supposed to. It went over a concrete jetty and sank. “I slam on the brakes where I’m supposed to stop and nothing happens,” he recalled.
How did Statham escape the sinking truck?
Statham said the vehicle sank quickly and that he escaped through a window, then swam to the surface. Describing the moment, he said: “The truck hits the water, the water slams me back and we’re just sinking fast – straight to the bottom.” He also recalled thinking, “This is how it ends.”

The measurements in the two accounts are not identical and should not be treated as a single verified depth. Stallone’s remarks, as quoted by the Irish Independent, put the truck about 60 feet into the sea. In LADbible’s account of Statham’s television interview, Statham described going “nine-feet over” the jetty and being “sixty-feet at the bottom of the Black Sea.” These are the speakers’ recollections, not measurements confirmed by a published accident investigation.
What did Stallone say about the incident?
Stallone told The Mirror, as relayed by the Irish Independent, that Statham “faced death.” He said the truck’s doors had been removed beforehand and credited Statham’s diving ability with helping him get out: “We would have drowned. But because Jason is an Olympic-quality diver he got out of it.” The news report presents Stallone’s account; it is not a production record or an independent investigation of the incident.

Why was Statham’s diving background relevant?
The Irish Independent reported that Statham competed for England in diving at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. LADbible’s account adds that he had been in Britain’s National Swimming Squad and competed in the 1-metre, 3-metre and 10-metre diving events. That background helps explain why Stallone emphasized his diving ability, but it does not independently verify the reported escape details.

The reports about the truck incident identify the film as The Expendables 3, released in 2014, but they do not establish a 126-minute runtime. Without a direct film reference supporting that figure, it should not be presented as verified.
