Jane Foster is an astrophysicist in Marvel’s 2011 film Thor because the filmmakers changed her profession from the comics: science adviser Sean M. Carroll suggested making her an experimental physicist, and the finished film portrayed her as an astrophysicist. The film’s production history explains that adaptation choice; it does not provide a detailed in-story account of her education or how she entered the field.
What changed between the comics and the film?
In the comics, Jane Foster was a nurse. In Thor (2011), she is an astrophysicist whose work brings her into contact with Thor. The change was part of adapting the character for the movie, not a plot event in which Jane suddenly became a scientist.

Why did the filmmakers make Jane a scientist?
Marvel sought scientific advice for Thor through the Science & Entertainment Exchange, a National Academy of Sciences program. The consultation was part of a broader effort to give the fantasy film a science-flavored framework, including an explanation for travel between Thor’s home realm and Earth.

Carroll, a theoretical physicist, suggested an Einstein–Rosen bridge—a term for a wormhole—as part of that effort. Jane’s scientific profession fit within the same broader approach: the production chose to make her a scientist, and the adviser’s proposal helped shape what kind of scientist she would be. That production history supports a creative rationale, not a claim that the film gives her a specific scientific origin story.
Does the film explain Jane’s scientific background?
The available production account identifies the decision to change Jane’s profession, but it does not establish a particular degree, mentor, childhood interest, or discovery as the reason she became an astrophysicist. It is safest to distinguish what the movie presents—Jane as a working astrophysicist—from the behind-the-scenes explanation for that characterization.

How does Jane’s later Marvel story fit in?
Later official coverage continues to describe Jane as an astrophysicist. D23’s 2022 retrospective identifies Natalie Portman as originating the role in Thor (2011) and reprising it in Thor: The Dark World (2013), before Jane’s transformation into the Mighty Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder. D23’s retrospective and Disney’s coverage of the film discuss that later arc. Her superhero transformation is subsequent character development, not the explanation for why the first film made her a scientist.
