Furious 7 completed Paul Walker’s remaining scenes with a blend of footage he had already filmed, performances from stand-ins, and visual effects. Walker’s brothers, Caleb and Cody, and actor John Brotherton supplied on-set performances and likeness references; Wētā FX artists then combined those with scans, earlier footage, digital facial work and compositing. The methods varied from shot to shot—Walker was not simply recreated entirely by computer for every scene.
What Paul Walker had filmed before his death
Walker died during production in November 2013. CBS reported in April 2015 that the overall film was about halfway through filming at the time. That does not mean half of Walker’s scenes were unfinished: a production statement reported by TIME in April 2014 said he had filmed his dramatic scenes and most of his action. The two accounts describe different scopes, so they do not establish a precise percentage of his role that had been completed.
After a production hiatus, the filmmakers decided to continue and finish the story. Director James Wan later said Wētā’s main task was finishing shots with Walker, within a much larger effects effort for the entire film.
Who performed in the unfinished material
Caleb and Cody Walker, Paul’s brothers, and actor John Brotherton provided stand-in performances and reference. Wētā visual-effects supervisor Joe Letteri told the Los Angeles Times that Brotherton had studied Walker, while the brothers’ resemblance and mannerisms made them useful on set. Multiple cameras recorded their performances from different angles, and Wētā scanned the brothers and Brotherton for likeness and performance reference.

The stand-ins did not simply replace Walker as actors in the finished scenes. Depending on the shot, artists could keep much of a stand-in’s body performance and replace the head and face, or use the performance as a guide for a more extensive digital reconstruction. Wētā’s filmography for Furious 7 summarizes the approach as drawing on earlier footage, scans of Walker’s brothers and meticulous compositing.
How Wētā built the finished shots
Visual-effects supervisor Martin Hill described several approaches to fxguide. They were selected according to the shot, not applied as one universal trick.

Adapting footage Walker had already filmed
For some shots, artists used an existing filmed plate, tracked it, then adapted or retimed and composited it into the revised edit. Hill said this method accounted for less than 10 percent of the shots he was describing. That figure is not the share of Walker’s role that used effects, nor the share of the movie featuring him.
Re-projecting footage for the final drive
For the final driving sequence, the team combined footage from an earlier film with a computer-generated performance and projected it into three-dimensional space. Hill estimated that approach was 60 to 70 percent CG, while retaining portions of the original plate around the eyes. This estimate applies to that sequence’s method, not to all of Walker’s scenes.

Building a digital head and facial performance
When existing footage could not supply the required shot, artists used stand-in motion alongside Walker footage, still images, scans and other reference to guide a digital likeness and performance. The amount of reconstruction depended on factors such as dialogue, camera movement, lighting and the available reference. Close-up dialogue was particularly demanding: subtle mouth and facial motion had to fit the line and the stand-in’s performance. Letteri also identified eye movement, skin detail, lighting and facial motion as crucial to making the result convincing.
Why there was no single CGI solution
Walker’s finished scenes were assembled from different ingredients: previously filmed material, stand-in plates, digital facial work, re-projection and compositing. A shot with a usable piece of Walker footage could be handled differently from a close-up requiring new dialogue or a camera move that called for a more extensive digital head. The under-10-percent figure Hill gave refers only to adapting existing footage; the 60-to-70-percent CG estimate refers to the final driving sequence. Neither is a general measure of how much of Walker’s role was digitally created.

How the film said goodbye to Brian O’Conner
The filmmakers chose to complete Walker’s character arc rather than kill Brian O’Conner off. As TIME reported in 2014, Brian would retire. The ending lets him leave the group and gives the character a farewell, preserving Walker’s place in the film without continuing Brian’s story.
The effects work beyond Walker’s scenes
Wan told Post Magazine that the schedule expanded after Walker’s death and production paused while the team worked out how to continue. He described the film’s effects effort as well over 2,000 VFX shots completed by more than 10 vendors. Those figures cover the movie’s overall visual effects, not just the work on Walker’s scenes.
