A group of fans reviewing an early screenplay persuaded writer Christy Hall to restore the phrase “It ends with us” to Lily’s climactic exchange with her daughter. Hall’s draft had used different wording; the released film kept the title line after the fans objected.
What did the fans change?
In Hall’s first draft, Lily told her daughter, “It stops here, between you and me,” instead of “It ends with us.” Hall said she had left out the title phrase because she considered it a screenwriting rule that characters should not say the film’s title. The fans pushed back, and the finished movie restored the line.
Hall explained her initial thinking to Entertainment Weekly, as quoted by Vanity Fair: “As a screenwriter, a big no-no is you don’t want any character to ever say the title of the film.” In a separate account of the interview, Elite Daily quoted Hall recalling the reaction: “The entire room of 20 megafans were like, ‘You have to say it!’” Hall later concluded, “They were right and I was wrong.”
The line matters because it makes Lily’s decision legible in the language of the story’s title: she is ending a cycle of abuse rather than passing it on. The substitute wording conveyed a similar boundary, but the restored phrase connects that choice directly to the film’s central idea.

How many fans were involved?
Vanity Fair describes 20 “mega-fans” who signed nondisclosure agreements and received an early script draft; Hall said their view on the line was unanimous. That is the clearest account of the group whose feedback led to the change.
A separate Us Weekly report describes Justin Baldoni and Colleen Hoover gathering fans for a script reading and quotes Baldoni thanking “the ten we chose” from thousands of Los Angeles-area applicants. The available reporting does not establish whether those ten and Hall’s group of 20 were part of the same event, so the numbers should not be combined into one definitive count.

What the fan feedback does—and doesn’t—show
The documented result is specific: fans influenced one dialogue choice. The accounts do not establish that the group changed the casting, the film’s overall ending, or other adaptation decisions. Their input restored the title phrase in a key exchange; it is not evidence that fans broadly rewrote or controlled the movie.

The restored line is one decision within a larger process of adapting a novel for film. TIME’s account of the adaptation describes several other changes, without connecting them to the fans who reviewed Hall’s draft.

- Lily and Ryle are older. The film ages the characters up from their ages in the novel. Fans publicly debated the change when casting was announced; Hoover defended it by noting that “There’s no 28-year-old neurosurgeons, you know? You go to school for 15 years.”
- Atlas’s restaurant has a different name. In the novel it is BiB; in the film it is Root. Hoover explained that the movie did not have time to establish the “better in Boston” exchange that gives BiB its meaning. Root instead connects to a childhood conversation about an oak tree and its roots.
- Ellen DeGeneres is mostly absent. She features in Lily’s journals and her relationship with Atlas in the book, but the film retains only a brief childhood reference.
- Some supporting characters are omitted. Devin, Lucy and Ryle’s parents do not appear in the film.
These differences show the selection and compression involved in adapting the novel. They should be kept separate from the fan group’s documented influence on the title line. TIME reported that 6.9 million print and ebook copies had sold since the novel debuted; that is a historical figure reported in its 2024 adaptation coverage, not a current sales total.
