How Facebook’s Recommendation and Feed Ranking Systems Work

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Facebook does not use one universal algorithm to decide what every person sees. Meta describes a collection of machine-learning systems that select eligible posts, predict how relevant each may be to an individual, apply integrity and display rules, and then order the remaining items. The predictions use post characteristics, a person’s previous interactions, viewing behavior, and feedback such as hiding or requesting less of a topic.

The personalized Feed and recommendations from accounts, Pages, or Groups you do not follow are related but distinct processes. You can influence both with explicit controls, while the Feeds tab provides a more chronological view of posts from sources you choose to follow.

What Facebook’s Feed ranking is designed to do

When you open Facebook, the service has more potentially eligible posts than it can display in one screen. Ranking systems reduce that pool and arrange the survivors in an order intended to be useful or interesting to you. “Useful” is not a single universal score: Meta says different models make different predictions, and those models can operate separately or together.

Meta’s public explanation describes thousands of signals across Facebook and Instagram. Examples include characteristics of a post, likes, comments, views, how long people watch or read something, and your history with the person or organization that published it. The exact weights, model set, and many integrity-related signals are not public, so there is no reliable, current formula such as “a comment is worth exactly twice a reaction.”

In practice, a post can rank highly because it matches your interests, comes from an author with whom you regularly interact, or receives signals suggesting that people like you will spend meaningful time with it. A high reaction count alone does not guarantee a top position, and low visible engagement does not prove that a post was deliberately suppressed.

How a post moves through the ranking process

Meta’s January 2021 News Feed walkthrough provides a useful historical outline. It is a dated explanation rather than a promise that today’s systems use the same thresholds or architecture.

1. Build an eligible inventory

Facebook first gathers posts that could be shown to you. The inventory may include recent posts from friends, Pages, and Groups you follow, subject to privacy, eligibility, and integrity rules. A post that violates policy, is unavailable to you, or falls outside a product’s eligibility rules cannot win a ranking contest simply by attracting reactions.

2. Generate a candidate set

The service narrows a very large pool to a smaller set that merits detailed scoring. The 2021 walkthrough illustrated a reduction to approximately 500 candidates before the main scoring pass. That number belongs to the historical illustration; it should not be treated as a current fixed limit.

  • No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

3. Make multiple predictions

Separate models estimate possible outcomes for each candidate. Depending on the surface, predictions can concern whether you will click, react, comment, watch, read for a meaningful duration, hide the item, or find it relevant. A model can also account for the relationship between you and the author, the format of the post, and recency.

4. Apply integrity and narrowing checks

Meta says integrity-related processing and a further narrowing pass occur before final ordering. Some signals are intentionally undisclosed because publishing them could help people game distribution or evade safety systems. This is one reason outside observers cannot reconstruct a complete ranking formula from visible engagement numbers.

5. Order the remaining posts

The systems rank the remaining candidates using their combined predictions and contextual rules. The 2021 walkthrough also described constraints such as content-type diversity, which can prevent a feed from becoming a long uninterrupted run of one format or source. The final list is therefore more than a simple sort by likes.

Which signals can affect what you see?

Signals are evidence used by prediction models, not automatic guarantees. The same action can have different effects depending on the post, the author, your recent activity, and the surface where the item appears.

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • Post characteristics: Format, topic, freshness, and other properties help models identify what an item is about and which experiences it fits.
  • Interaction history: Likes, comments, shares, clicks, views, and reading or viewing duration can indicate interest. Repeated interaction with an author can also matter.
  • Negative or avoidance behavior: Leaving quickly, hiding a post, snoozing an author, or asking to see less of a topic can lower the likelihood of similar recommendations.
  • Context: Facebook can balance different content types and sources rather than filling the entire feed with the highest-volume posts.
  • Explicit feedback: Commands such as Show more or Show less are clearer instructions than a passive glance, so they can be useful for steering future recommendations.

Engagement is only one category of evidence. A post with many comments may still be a poor prediction for you, while a less popular item from a niche interest can be selected because your own history indicates that it is relevant.

Why are posts from people, Pages, or Groups I do not follow appearing?

Facebook has recommendation systems that can introduce content outside your followed network. Meta’s June 2023 description says these systems analyze content, retrieve a smaller set from a much larger pool, and rank it with pointwise and listwise predictions. They then adjust the mix to balance popular interests with narrower or more specialized interests.

This recommendation surface is not identical to ranking posts from sources you already follow. A followed post begins in a connected-content inventory; an unconnected recommendation must first be discovered and retrieved from a broader pool. Both can use predictions about your likely interest, but they serve different supply pipelines.

Meta reported in 2023 that more than 20 percent of content in a person’s Facebook and Instagram feeds was AI-recommended from people, groups, or accounts they did not follow. That figure combined Facebook and Instagram and reflected Meta’s statement at the time; it is not a current Facebook-only percentage.

What happens after a recommendation is shown?

Your response can inform later recommendations. Watching, liking, commenting, leaving quickly, hiding, snoozing, or selecting Show more or Show less provides additional evidence. The system may use that evidence to change the probability of similar items appearing, but one action does not create a permanent reset or guarantee that a topic will disappear.

How the personalized Feed differs from the Feeds tab

Surface Primary purpose What determines order
Personalized Feed Mix posts predicted to be relevant from eligible sources Machine-learning predictions, interaction history, content signals, integrity checks, and contextual rules
Recommendations Introduce content from sources you may not follow Retrieval from a broad pool, pointwise and listwise predictions, and balancing of popular and niche interests
Feeds tab Show posts from selected followed sources in a more chronological view Recency and the selected source category, subject to Facebook’s availability and display rules

Meta documents the Feeds tab as a way to view posts chronologically, but product labels and placement can change. A chronological view is not the same as a complete archive: it still reflects the sources and categories you selected and may omit content that is unavailable or ineligible.

How to change what Facebook recommends

The names and locations of controls can vary by app version, account, and region. Use the labels Facebook displays rather than assuming that every account has an identical menu.

Use Feed preferences for broad changes

  1. Open Facebook’s main menu and look for Feed preferences (it may be listed under Settings & privacy or a Feed section).
  2. Review options for selecting favorites, unfollowing sources, reconnecting with sources, snoozing, or managing the content you see less often.
  3. Save each change, then use Facebook normally so the system receives new evidence about your preferences.

Give post-level feedback

  1. Open the three-dot menu on a post you do not want.
  2. Choose the available control, such as Hide post, Snooze, Unfollow, Show less, or a related feedback option.
  3. For a post you want more often, use Show more when Facebook offers it. Do not select a negative control merely to dismiss a single item; it can be interpreted as a broader preference.

Inspect “Why am I seeing this?”

For some recommended items, the Why am I seeing this? explanation identifies categories of activity that may have influenced the recommendation. It is an explanation of selected factors, not a disclosure of every model input or the exact numerical score.

Can you reset Facebook’s recommendations?

Facebook provides controls that let you steer recommendations, but the documented controls do not amount to a universal “erase every ranking signal” switch. Unfollowing, snoozing, hiding, and Show less can reduce particular sources or topics. Show more can reinforce an interest. Moving to Feeds changes the ordering surface rather than deleting your activity history.

For a practical reset-like cleanup, remove sources you no longer want, clear unwanted recommendations as they appear, and avoid interacting with topics you are trying to see less often. Then deliberately engage with the sources and subjects you do want. Changes can take time because the models use a history of activity rather than a single command.

What Meta’s public numbers do—and do not—show

More than 20 percent of recommended content

Meta said in 2023 that more than 20 percent of content across Facebook and Instagram feeds came from AI recommendations involving people, groups, or accounts a person did not follow. The statement is useful evidence that unconnected recommendations are substantial, but it is not a current measurement for Facebook alone and does not describe every country, account, or feed format.

A reported 15 percent increase in Reels watch time

Meta also said its AI advances contributed to a 15 percent increase in watch time in Facebook’s Reels video player during the previous fall. This is a company-attributed result, not independent causal verification, and it applies to the Reels player rather than all Feed ranking.

What remains unknown

Meta’s explanations establish the broad design, not the exact current implementation. Public material does not provide a complete list of signals, model weights, ranking thresholds, or the way each feature behaves for every account. The 2021 candidate-stage diagram is historical, and integrity systems are deliberately only partly described.

Consequently, advice that promises a fixed posting formula, a guaranteed reach boost from one reaction type, or a precise time window for escaping a ranking change goes beyond the available evidence. The defensible conclusion is that Facebook uses many interacting predictions and that users can influence those predictions through both behavior and explicit controls.

A simple way to diagnose an unexpected post

  • Post from a followed source: Check whether recent interaction with that author or topic explains its prominence, then use Hide, Snooze, Unfollow, or Feed preferences if it is unwanted.
  • Post from an unfamiliar source: Open Why am I seeing this? and look for recommendation-related factors; use Show less or hide the item if it does not fit.
  • Feed feels repetitive: Use Feeds for a chronological source-based view and review Favorites or unfollow settings.
  • Recommendations changed after one action: Expect gradual adjustment rather than an immediate permanent reset; continue giving consistent feedback.
  • A control is missing: Check the account’s current menu, app version, and region. Meta’s interface and feature availability can change.

Facebook’s ranking systems are best understood as adaptive prediction services, not a single switch labeled “the algorithm.” The personalized Feed, recommendations from outside your network, and chronological Feeds view each solve a different ordering problem. Knowing which surface you are using—and giving it clear, consistent feedback—is the most reliable way to make the resulting selection better match your interests.
