Elliot Page has said his relationship with Olivia Thirlby during the making of Juno was intense and important to him. He has not said that it changed his career, and the available accounts do not establish that it did. Page’s reflections are instead about recognizing his own feelings and being inspired by Thirlby’s ease with herself.
What Page has said about the relationship
In a 2023 interview with The Guardian about his memoir Pageboy, Page described a relationship with Thirlby while they were making Juno. He said it had been intense for him and that Thirlby may not have realized how much it mattered: “I don’t think she knew the impact that relationship had on me, and how important it was.” He also said, “I was inspired by her and her ability to be herself.” The Guardian’s interview connects his account to questions of queerness, comfort, and authenticity.

Page’s memoir recounts attraction and sexual intimacy during filming; those details are his account, not independently corroborated statements from Thirlby. The Independent’s 2023 coverage also attributes its description of the relationship to the memoir. The public record cited here does not include a separate account from Thirlby about the private relationship.
Did their relationship change Page’s career?
There is no established evidence that the relationship changed Page’s career. His comments describe personal significance and influence, not a resulting change in casting, roles, or professional opportunities. In discussing career distress, Page has focused on the strain of hiding his identity and pressure to conform, including considering leaving acting despite professional success. His 2023 interview with The Guardian is the basis for the relationship reflections; it does not present a career effect caused by the relationship.

Juno was a milestone, but not evidence of causation
Juno was a major professional milestone for Page. The Irish Times reported in 2023 that the film had a budget of about $7 million, earned more than $230 million at the box office, and brought Page a best-actress Oscar nomination. Those figures describe the film’s reach and Page’s recognition; they do not show that his relationship with Thirlby produced those outcomes. The Irish Times’ account provides that career context.
What Thirlby said about her own career
Thirlby described Juno as a landmark for her career, saying she had been getting more offers. She also qualified the timing: The Wackness had already been cast and filmed before Juno came out. In a 2008 interview, she said, “It was obviously a huge landmark and I’ve been getting more offers recently, although The Wackness was cast and filmed before Juno came out.” The Guardian’s 2008 interview with Thirlby concerns her opportunities, not a career effect on Page or the effect of their relationship.

Page’s account supports a story about a relationship that helped him reflect on his queerness and was personally important to him. It does not support the stronger claim that the relationship changed his career. His professional milestone was Juno; the evidence does not connect that success causally to the relationship.
