Justin Timberlake reportedly called the idea of an *NSYNC television show cheesy while visiting the Boy Meets World set in the late 1990s—only to discover that Micky Dolenz, the Monkees musician and a director on the set, had overheard him. The story comes from actor Rider Strong’s later recollection, as reported by Parade.
What did Justin Timberlake say?
Strong recalled that he and Timberlake were discussing the possibility of *NSYNC making a television show in which the group would act. The two reacted to the idea as cheesy and said they did not want to do it. They did not realize Dolenz was standing behind them.

According to Strong’s account, Dolenz challenged their response: “Why? Why not? Why not?” Strong recalled Timberlake turning, recognizing Dolenz, and backpedaling with: “Yeah, we really don’t wanna do that.” Both lines are remembered dialogue attributed to Strong—not independently recorded quotes from Dolenz or Timberlake.
Why was Micky Dolenz there?
Dolenz was reportedly directing on the Boy Meets World set when the conversation took place. Strong’s recollection places the encounter in the late 1990s, but Parade does not identify a specific date.

Was Timberlake insulting The Monkees?
Not directly, based on the account. The conversation was about the idea of *NSYNC starring in a television show, not a criticism of The Monkees or Dolenz’s work. The awkwardness came from dismissing an acting-and-music-group TV concept while a veteran of one of the best-known examples was listening.

The anecdote rests on Strong’s recollection as reported by Parade. The report does not include direct confirmation from Dolenz or Timberlake, a transcript, or a recording of the conversation. It also documents no lasting dispute between them. The most careful description is therefore that Timberlake reportedly made the dismissive remark, then changed course after recognizing Dolenz.
