Who was Eddie Van Halen’s former wife?
His former wife is actor and author Valerie Bertinelli. They married in 1981 and formally separated in 2001; CBS News reported the separation in 2002. Their divorce was finalized in December 2007, according to Us Weekly’s 2026 timeline. The marriage and separation made headlines, but Bertinelli had an established career of her own before the divorce.
When the separation was announced, Bertinelli’s representative described it as amicable and asked for privacy for the couple and their young son. That was a request about the family, not a disclosure about money. CBS News’ July 2002 report said they had been married for 20 years.
Did the divorce make Bertinelli wealthy?
The reviewed reporting does not establish that it did. Us Weekly says the parties resolved their issues amicably in mediation, citing contemporaneous court documents, but reports no settlement terms or payment amount. Without those terms, “amicably” cannot be taken to mean that Bertinelli received a large payout—or any particular sum.

Nor do the available career profiles report her earnings, book sales, or a verified personal net worth. Figures circulated by celebrity net-worth websites should not be treated as confirmed financial disclosures. The evidence supports a career story, not a quantified fortune or a claim that Van Halen’s wealth was transferred to his former wife.
What work shaped her career after the separation?
Acting and writing
Bertinelli’s public career did not begin with the divorce. She was already an actor, and she continued writing after the separation. Us Weekly notes that she published the memoir Losing It in 2008. Her later memoirs include Enough Already and Getting Naked; the existence of books documents her work, not what they earned.
Cookbooks and food television
Her food-media career added another strand. The Washington Post’s 2024 profile identifies One Dish at a Time as her first cookbook, published in 2012. It reports that she began hosting Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship in 2015 and hosted Food Network programs for eight years. The profile also covers her 2024 cookbook, Indulge, and says her Food Network contract had expired the previous year.
Those milestones show a sustained professional presence in cooking and television after the separation. They do not reveal contract pay, royalties, sales, or total income. Bertinelli described cooking as a continuing part of her life in the Washington Post profile: “But,” she said, “I’ll never stop cooking.”

What has Bertinelli said about her relationship with Van Halen?
In a 2022 Salon interview, Bertinelli described remaining connected to Van Halen for their son and later rebuilding a loving friendship. “We stayed connected and stayed friendly for Wolfie, but then it grew back to the original feeling of that soulful love that we have for one another,” she said. This is her account of their relationship, not a statement about divorce finances.
