How Dr. Donald Sturz Plans to Transform the Westminster Dog Show Experience

Dr. Donald Sturz is reshaping Westminster around access: richer in-person storytelling, better digital discovery and a split 2027 streaming plan that puts Best in Show live on Netflix without abandoning the benched-show tradition.

Westminster’s next evolution is already taking shape: the live, benched dog show stays at the center, while interactive programming, better digital access and a new Netflix partnership broaden who can understand—and take part in—the experience.

Dr. Donald Sturz’s plan is not to turn Westminster into a different kind of dog show. It is to make one of America’s oldest live sporting traditions easier to enter, more rewarding to experience in person, and far easier to follow from anywhere in the world.

The clearest evidence is already visible in two connected moves: the 150th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show used archival storytelling, hands-on encounters and performance-sport programming to make the grounds feel like more than a sequence of judging rings; and the 151st show, scheduled for New York City in 2027, will put evening group judging and Best in Show live on Netflix. The core conformation competition remains intact. What is changing is the experience wrapped around it—on the floor, between the competitions, online and across the globe.

A legacy event designed to feel participatory

Westminster is a benched dog show, a format that asks exhibitors to remain available with their dogs rather than simply arriving for judging and leaving. That feature is central to Sturz’s thinking, not an outdated obstacle to modernization.

In his view, benching gives members of the public a chance to ask breeders, owners and handlers questions, while giving exhibitors time to see one another and build camaraderie. In an era of “show and go” events, he has argued, that changes the atmosphere. It also gives a newcomer a way into a sport that can otherwise look closed-off: a person can meet the dog, speak with the people responsible for it, and understand what is being judged.

That commitment has historical weight. Westminster says its first bench show was held in Manhattan in 1877, with 1,201 dogs entered, and describes the event as the second-longest continuously held sporting event in the United States. Sturz’s strategy is therefore less about abandoning tradition than using tradition as the basis for a more social public event.

The 150th show was the working prototype

The best guide to what “transform” means is Sturz’s own account of the 150th show. His team did not treat the anniversary as competition plus vendors. It built an environment intended to sustain a sense of celebration throughout the day and evening.

At the Javits Center, that included a Market Hall, vendor and Purina Pro Plan spaces, additional seating and bleachers, the Westminster Historical Installation, and a Sensation Stage. At Madison Square Garden, the evening arena was part of the same larger experience rather than a separate final act.

The historical installation is especially revealing. Sturz described a walk-through presentation built from archival images, selected and positioned so visitors could view them from different angles in a gallery-like setting. The anniversary book evolved along similar lines: instead of serving only as a printed program, it became a visual, photo-led history with quotations and a foldout timeline. These are not merely decorative additions. They make the institution’s history legible to a visitor who may not already know it.

The Westminster Legends program pursued a different kind of access. Visitors could see celebrated former winners, meet some of them up close and take photographs. Sturz has said that such encounters help people recognize that elite show dogs are also pets—his view of why the format is good public relations for dog sports.

Even the pauses in the evening program became part of the design. Agility and flyball demonstrations during arena breaks were meant to keep the audience engaged, introduce performance sports, and show people ways they might participate with their own dogs. Entertainment between group judging was selected with the same purpose: maintain energy without displacing the competition at the center of the night.

For a first-time visitor, that approach matters. A conformation show can be fascinating but difficult to decode if all a spectator sees is a ring, a brief judging sequence and a result. Storytelling, demonstrations and direct encounters create several ways to understand why the dogs and their people are there.

The biggest confirmed change: a split streaming plan for 2027

Sturz’s audience strategy now has a concrete global-distribution component. The 151st Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is scheduled for early 2027 in New York City. Evening group judging and Best in Show are scheduled for February 1–2 at Madison Square Garden and will be live on Netflix.

That does not make the event Netflix-only. The announced plan divides the coverage by program:

Program Venue Planned access
Daytime breed competition Jacob K. Javits Convention Center Live streams on Tudum and Westminster’s website
Evening group judging and Best in Show Madison Square Garden Live on Netflix, February 1–2, 2027
Westminster’s Canine Celebration, including the Masters Agility Championship Javits Center, January 30, 2027 The competition is planned to be taped and streamed later

That distinction is important. The official plan confirms Netflix for the evening Garden competition; it does not confirm that every Westminster event, including agility, will be live on Netflix.

Sturz called the Netflix arrangement an exciting new chapter for the club and said it would expand Westminster’s reach while introducing dog sports to audiences worldwide. The split-platform model also preserves something valuable for dedicated viewers: focused daytime breed judging remains available as its own experience, rather than being compressed into a prime-time highlights program.

Digital access is meant to support the live show, not replace it

Before the Netflix announcement, Sturz had already described technology as a tool for accessibility and efficiency. Westminster has used advance appointment scheduling for special events, and he has emphasized livestreaming for people who cannot attend in person and for viewers who want to study a particular breed’s judging.

The club has also revamped its website and newsletter, expanded social-media activity, and used scheduling tools to help visitors build fuller days at the event. Sturz has credited creators and influencers with carrying individual Westminster stories to a larger digital audience.

This is a useful distinction for anyone expecting a simple streaming pivot. The strategy has three layers:

  1. Improve the in-person day: make it easier to plan, easier to navigate and more interesting between judging sessions.
  2. Make the event understandable online: use livestreams, schedules, social coverage and breed-specific viewing paths for people who cannot be in New York.
  3. Expand the top-of-funnel audience: use Netflix’s global platform for the evening competition, when the groups and Best in Show provide the clearest narrative for a broad audience.

For documentary-minded viewers, that creates a more useful way to watch. The prime-time broadcast can provide the drama and culmination; the daytime streams offer the granular process—breeds, handlers, exhibitors and judging—that explains how the finalists reached that stage.

What has not changed

Conformation remains the competitive core. The point of the surrounding programming is not to turn Westminster into a concert or a general pet festival; it is to give more people pathways into the dogs, the sport and its history.

The 2026 edition illustrated the hybrid physical model: daytime breed competition at Javits followed by evening group judging and Best in Show at Madison Square Garden. The 2027 schedule continues that division. The club has also announced that more than 3,000 champion dogs representing 200 breeds are expected, with Norwegian judge and breeder Espen Engh named as Best in Show judge. Those program details, along with tickets and access terms, should be checked again close to the event because schedules and availability can change.

Do not mistake the anniversary prototype for a fixed 2027 blueprint

The 150th anniversary is evidence of Sturz’s design philosophy, not a confirmed list of 151st-show attractions. He has said the team began working on the next show immediately after the anniversary, recognized that the 150th brought extra “bells and whistles,” and did not want 2027 to feel like a retread. At the same time, he said the next event would retain the milestone year’s energy and excitement.

The practical reading is straightforward: expect continuity in the ambition to make Westminster lively, informative and welcoming. Do not assume the return of a particular historical installation, Legends segment, performer, vendor layout, seating arrangement or stage program until Westminster announces it.

The unresolved question: welfare and pedigree breeding

A fuller Westminster experience does not settle the broader debate around pedigree breeding and canine welfare. In reporting around the 2026 show, the Associated Press noted that PETA planned demonstrations and nearby billboards focused on breathing problems in flat-faced dogs.

Sturz responded by pointing to Westminster’s longstanding commitment to dog welfare and to the club’s support for veterinary scholarships, pet-friendly domestic-violence shelters, rescue groups and other causes. Those are the club’s stated charitable and welfare commitments. They should not be treated as an independent resolution of critics’ concerns about breeding-related health issues.

That tension will continue to be part of the public context for Westminster, particularly as a Netflix deal brings the show to people who may be encountering pedigree-dog competition for the first time. Greater reach creates an opportunity to explain the sport; it also guarantees greater scrutiny.

What viewers and visitors should expect

For the 151st show, the known facts are significant: a January 30 Canine Celebration at Javits, daytime breed judging streamed via Tudum and Westminster, and Netflix carrying the February 1–2 evening judging and Best in Show from Madison Square Garden. Tickets were on sale through Westminster when the announcement was made, but inventory, pricing and streaming terms are inherently changeable.

What remains to be announced is the visitor-experience layer. If the 150th show is the guide, the worthwhile question is not whether Westminster will retain its traditions. It is how the club will use stories, programming, scheduling and digital distribution to let more people take part in them.

For historical context away from the event, the relevant physical companion is William Stifel’s The Dog Show: 125 Years of Westminster. It is a history of Westminster, not the newer 150th-anniversary commemorative book.

Is Westminster moving away from its traditional benched-show format?

Sturz supports the benched format because it lets visitors speak with breeders, owners and handlers and gives exhibitors time to connect with peers. His approach is to make that tradition more accessible, not eliminate it.

Will the 150th-anniversary installations and programs return in 2027?

No specific repeat attractions have been confirmed. Sturz has said he does not want the 2027 show to be a retread of the 150th anniversary, though he wants to retain its energy and excitement.

The Bottom Line

Sturz’s transformation is an expansion of access, not a rejection of Westminster’s identity: preserve the benched show and conformation competition, make the live event more human and legible, then bring its biggest night to a global audience through Netflix.
