The short explanation of the Time Cut ending
Lucy discovers that the Sweetly Slasher is Future Quinn, an older version of her classmate Quinn. In the original timeline, Quinn is bullied, thrown into a river, and left traumatized by the experience. As an adult, he uses the SONR antimatter time machine to travel back to 2003 and take revenge on the people connected to the humiliation, including Summer and her friends.
Lucy changes the past by stopping the river attack. She and the 2003 version of Quinn then confront the older killer. Although Val and Brian still die, Summer and Emmy survive. Lucy kills Future Quinn by stabbing him through the heart.

That victory creates a painful paradox. Summer’s survival changes Lucy’s family history so completely that Lucy is no longer born in the revised future. Rather than remain in a 2024 where her parents do not know her, Lucy returns to 2003 and chooses to stay with Summer. The film presents that decision as an emotional sacrifice: Lucy gives up her original life so that her sister can have one.
Who is the Sweetly Slasher?
The killer is not the teenage Quinn whom Lucy meets in 2003. He is Quinn’s future self, played by Griffin Gluck in the film’s killer reveal. That distinction explains how Quinn can appear to be both an apparently vulnerable teenager and the person responsible for the murders.
In the timeline that produced the killings, Quinn is socially isolated but also kind and scientifically curious. His classmates’ bullying reaches a decisive point when they throw him into a river. The event becomes the trauma around which his later identity is formed. He grows into the Sweetly Slasher, acquires access to the SONR time machine, and travels back to 2003 to pursue revenge.
The twist therefore has two versions of the same character occupying the story:

- 2003 Quinn: the younger student Lucy befriends and tries to protect.
- Future Quinn: the older, revenge-driven murderer created by the original timeline.
Lucy does not kill the Quinn she has come to know. She kills the older version after the Slasher’s arrival in the altered present. By preventing the river incident, she also gives young Quinn the opportunity to follow a different path.
Does Lucy save Summer and Emmy?
Yes. Lucy’s intervention changes the murder sequence enough for Summer and Emmy to survive. Summer is no longer killed as she was in the original history, and she has a chance to pursue her relationship with Emmy.
Rank #2
The altered outcome is not completely bloodless. Val and Brian still die, so Lucy does not undo every consequence of the confrontation. But the central tragedy is interrupted: Summer lives, Emmy is not lost with her, and Quinn’s defining trauma is prevented.
Lucy ultimately brings Future Quinn’s attack to an end by stabbing him through the heart. The immediate result is that both Lucy and Summer are alive in 2003, while the older killer is dead.

Saving Summer changes the circumstances that led to Lucy’s birth. In the original future, Summer’s death leaves Lucy’s parents living with grief, and Lucy is born within that altered family history. Once Summer survives, that family history no longer unfolds in the same way.
In other words, Lucy has saved the sister whose death helped create the life Lucy remembers—but doing so removes the conditions under which Lucy existed. The revised future does not simply contain a different version of Lucy waiting to meet her. The film treats the change as meaning that Lucy was never born in that timeline.
This is not shown as Lucy being physically murdered or killed by the time machine. The Lucy who traveled through time remains conscious and retains her memories of the original timeline. The problem is that the revised 2024 no longer has a place for her identity or family relationships. Her parents do not know her because, within the new history, she was never part of their lives.
Why does Lucy return to 2003?
Lucy returns to 2003 because it is the one time and place where she can remain with Summer. In the revised future, preserving her own former life is no longer possible. She therefore chooses the sister she originally never got to experience as a living sibling over a future that has erased her.

The ending is deliberately bittersweet rather than conventionally triumphant. Summer is alive, and Lucy gets the chance to be with her, but the two cannot simply resume the ordinary sisterly relationship they would have had in the original family history. Lucy is now an outsider from a timeline that no longer exists.
The final image prioritizes that emotional reunion over a detailed account of what happens next. Director and co-writer Hannah Macpherson told Netflix’s Tudum that the production considered alternate endings, including one in which both sisters were alive in the present, but chose the 2003 ending because it provided the stronger emotional image. Macpherson also acknowledged that the choice favored the feeling of the moment over strict time-travel logic. Netflix Tudum’s ending explanation discusses that decision and the film’s timeline.
How does the Time Cut timeline work?
The film is best understood as using an altered or branching timeline, not a perfectly closed time loop. Lucy travels from 2024 to 2003, changes events, and creates a future with different consequences. However, the film allows parts of the original chain of events to remain active long enough for the story to reach its confrontation with Future Quinn.
A practical way to map the ending is:
- Original history: Summer is murdered, Quinn experiences the river attack, and Lucy is later born into a family shaped by Summer’s death.
- Quinn’s transformation: the older Quinn becomes the Sweetly Slasher and uses the SONR machine to go back to 2003.
- Lucy changes the past: she prevents the bullies from throwing young Quinn into the river and helps Summer and Emmy survive.
- Future Quinn is stopped: Lucy kills the older Quinn, separating him from the younger Quinn whose life has now been redirected.
- The future changes: Summer’s survival alters Lucy’s family history, meaning Lucy is no longer born in the revised 2024.
- Lucy chooses the past: she returns to 2003 and stays with Summer instead of remaining in an altered future where her identity has been erased.
This structure creates the film’s central paradox: Lucy must remain present long enough to save Summer, even though saving Summer eventually removes the future from which Lucy came. The movie does not provide a rigorous scientific rule that resolves every step of that paradox. Netflix’s official discussion acknowledges that the story contains time-travel contradictions and that the filmmakers used a detailed timeline while developing it.
What happens to the two versions of Quinn?
Young Quinn survives. Because Lucy prevents the river attack, he is no longer locked into the traumatic sequence that originally helped turn him into the Sweetly Slasher. The film implies that he can now live a healthier life, although it does not follow him through the entire revised future.
Future Quinn dies. Lucy kills him during the final confrontation by stabbing him through the heart. This does not create a simple contradiction in which Lucy murders the innocent teenager she befriended. The younger Quinn and the older killer are separate points in the character’s life, and the younger version’s future has been altered before it reaches the path that produced the murderer.
Rank #4
The distinction matters thematically. Lucy is not condemning Quinn merely for being capable of becoming dangerous. She is trying to prevent the abuse and humiliation that helped produce the older killer, while also stopping the version of him who has already chosen revenge and murder.
What is the ending saying about bullying and revenge?
The time travel is more emotionally purposeful than mechanically precise. At the story level, Lucy changes one formative event and breaks the chain connecting humiliation, resentment, and revenge. The river attack is not presented as an excuse that absolves Future Quinn of responsibility; he is still the murderer Lucy must stop. But the film also asks what might happen if someone intervened before the trauma hardened into a destructive identity.
Lucy makes a second intervention of her own. She cannot preserve the life she came from and save Summer at the same time. Her choice turns the ending into a sacrifice for family: she accepts the loss of her recognized identity so that Summer can live and Quinn can avoid the path that created the Slasher.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do some viewers find the ending confusing?
The emotional outcome is straightforward, but the mechanics are left incomplete. The movie does not show a fully revised 2024 in which viewers can see exactly how Summer’s survival changes Lucy’s parents, whether the other characters’ lives are different, or how Lucy’s presence in 2003 fits into the new history.
That omission has led to audience criticism, particularly around Lucy choosing to abandon technology and her parents for a past she can no longer technically belong to. The Independent reported those reactions and also noted complaints about the film’s presentation of 2003. Those are viewer responses, not objective facts about what the ending must mean, but they identify the film’s main weakness for audiences seeking firm time-travel rules.
There are two fair ways to read the finale:
- Emotional reading: Lucy chooses Summer’s life, ends the cycle that created the killer, and accepts the personal cost of changing history.
- Logical reading: the film leaves unresolved how Lucy can remain in 2003 after creating a timeline in which she was never born, and why some events change while others continue long enough to reach the finale.
The first reading explains why the film ends with the sisters together. The second explains why the ending may feel unsatisfying to viewers expecting a consistent single-timeline model.

What the final minutes ultimately mean
Time Cut ends with Lucy accomplishing her mission, but not with a clean return to normal. She identifies Future Quinn as the Sweetly Slasher, prevents the original river trauma, saves Summer and Emmy, and kills the older Quinn. Her success rewrites the future so that Lucy herself is no longer born.
Lucy responds by returning to 2003 and staying with Summer. The ending’s intended message is that saving someone you love can demand a sacrifice that cannot be reversed. Its time-travel rules remain loose, but its emotional choice is clear: Lucy would rather lose the future that made her than preserve a world in which Summer is dead.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why is Lucy erased from the future?
Summer’s survival changes the family history that originally led to Lucy’s birth. The revised future therefore treats Lucy as someone who was never born, rather than someone who has simply died.
Why does Lucy stay in 2003?
Lucy returns to 2003 because the revised 2024 no longer contains her original identity or family life. She chooses to stay with Summer, accepting the loss of her former future.
Is the Time Cut ending logically consistent?
The film uses an altered-timeline approach, but it does not resolve every paradox consistently. Its emotional meaning is clearer than its scientific time-travel mechanics.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Future Quinn is the Sweetly Slasher. Lucy kills him, saves Summer and Emmy, and prevents young Quinn’s river trauma. Those changes erase Lucy’s birth from the revised future, so she returns to 2003 and chooses to stay with Summer. The ending is emotionally optimistic but intentionally imperfect as a time-travel explanation.
