Does Rey kill Kylo Ren when she stabs him?
No. On Kef Bir, Leia reaches out to her son through the Force, distracting him during his confrontation with Rey. Rey stabs him with his own lightsaber, mortally wounding him, but then heals him before leaving. The wound is not his final cause of death.

How does Ben Solo return to the light?
After Rey leaves, Ben sees a vision of his father, Han. The encounter helps him reclaim his identity as Ben Solo. He throws away his red Sith lightsaber and returns to Exegol, where he joins Rey against Palpatine.
What happens to Ben on Exegol?
- Ben and Rey confront Palpatine together.
- Palpatine drains their life force and throws Ben into a chasm. Ben survives the fall.
- Rey defeats Palpatine but collapses.
- Ben climbs out of the chasm and transfers his remaining life force to Rey. She revives, and Ben dies, passing into the Force.
What Ben Solo’s ending means
StarWars.com frames Ben’s ending as a choice to turn away from darkness and help save Rey, connecting his redemption with the saga’s theme of Anakin Skywalker’s sacrifice. That is the franchise’s stated thematic framing; broader moral interpretations are open to viewers.

Optional story companion
Rae Carson’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Expanded Edition is a prose adaptation with expanded scenes and additional detail. The film presents the on-screen sequence; the novelization offers more story context, but it is not required to understand Ben’s ending.
