How Documentary Film Screenings Can Support Displaced Children

Documentary screenings can give displaced children recreation, shared learning, social connection and a chance to see their experiences represented. They are not, on the evidence currently available, a stand-alone treatment for trauma or a proven way to improve mental-health outcomes. The most responsible model places a screening inside wider child-protection, education and psychosocial services, with local safeguarding arrangements.

A UNICEF account of Cinema Al-Za’atari in Jordan illustrates the possibility: after reopening, the camp cinema had recorded about 10,000 child visits and screened around 20 international films, according to a story published on 7 December 2025. Those figures show reach, not therapeutic impact.

What a documentary screening can offer

Displacement can interrupt schooling, separate families, remove familiar routines and expose children to protection risks. UNICEF and UNHCR describe these needs as part of broader systems of protection, care, basic services, education and inclusion. A film event cannot replace those systems, but it can be one structured activity within them.

Recreation and a predictable shared activity

A scheduled screening gives children a reason to gather, relax and do something not organized around an appointment, distribution or emergency. In a child-friendly space, that routine can be valuable in itself. UNICEF describes child-friendly spaces as safe places where children on the move can play; UNHCR identifies learning and play as activities that can help displaced children cope. These statements support age-appropriate communal activity, not a claim that a film cures distress.

Learning through real stories

A documentary can introduce places, languages, science, history or everyday experiences that children might not encounter in a disrupted school year. A facilitator can pause for questions, explain unfamiliar references and connect the film to a lesson or creative activity. The educational value depends on the title, the age group and the discussion around it rather than on the documentary label alone.

Connection and participation

Watching together creates a shared reference point for children who may speak different languages or come from different communities. A post-film conversation, drawing session or cooperative game can let children choose how much they want to participate. The activity should never require a child to disclose a personal experience of war, flight or loss.

More human representation

Film can present displaced children as individuals rather than as an anonymous crisis. UNICEF’s 2017 film about Ahmed, a 12-year-old Syrian refugee, and Harry, a 92-year-old former child refugee, was explicitly framed around the people behind headline statistics. UNICEF Director Paloma Escudero said:

“We hope that this video will serve as a reminder that behind the headlines are the stories of individual children. Not refugees, not migrants, but children, whose only dream is safety, and the chance of a brighter future.”

A separate UNICEF announcement about a 2017 film by Rankin said its purpose was to challenge stereotypes by showing that refugee and migrant children have the same hopes, fears and dreams as other children. Those projects demonstrate an approach to representation; they do not prove that every displaced child will respond positively to every film.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

The clearest current example is Cinema Al-Za’atari in Jordan. UNICEF and United Nations Volunteers reported on 7 December 2025 that the camp cinema had welcomed approximately 10,000 child visits and screened about 20 international films since reopening the previous year. The account describes the venue as a place for enjoyment, learning and connection. It is a programme story reporting attendance and activity, not a controlled evaluation of psychological or educational outcomes.

UNHCR’s Philippines Refugee Film Festival page for 2026 describes film and documentary screenings as a way to raise awareness, build empathy and mobilize action. The event date, 20 June 2026, has passed. Its stated aims explain why organizers use film in public engagement; they are not measured effects on children who attend.

The available sources do not identify a controlled study showing that documentary screenings alone improve mental health, reduce trauma symptoms or produce a specific developmental gain. An evaluation record for UNICEF’s broader emergency psychosocial response in Jordan, dated 27 May 2014, is not described as an evaluation of cinema or documentary interventions. Claims should therefore stay at the level supported by the evidence: screenings may contribute recreation, learning, connection and representation when delivered appropriately.

Fit a screening into a wider child-support programme

UNICEF’s Global Programme Framework for Children on the Move, published in June 2026, sets out five action areas. They provide a useful planning frame for deciding what a screening is supposed to contribute.

  1. Address root causes and minimize risks. A film night cannot resolve the causes of displacement. It should be scheduled and located so that attendance does not expose children to unsafe travel, crowding or unwanted public attention.
  2. Provide a continuum of protection and care. The venue needs a responsible adult team, a clear way to respond if a child becomes distressed, and a referral route through the organization responsible for protection in that setting.
  3. Ensure learning and basic services. Link a screening to an existing child-friendly space, school-support activity or learning session rather than presenting entertainment as a substitute for education, health care or assistance.
  4. End discrimination and strengthen social cohesion. Choose stories that avoid portraying displaced people as helpless or threatening. Mixed groups should be welcomed without forcing children to speak for a nationality, religion or migration status.
  5. Promote integration and long-term solutions. Where appropriate, invite local children and displaced children to participate on equal terms, and connect the event to sustained community activities rather than a one-off spectacle.

UNICEF and UNHCR both emphasize that children need protection, care, services, education and opportunities to play. A screening is strongest when those supports already exist or are available through a partner.

Choose a film without turning suffering into a spectacle

Start with the audience

Define the approximate age range, languages, reading levels, attention span and accessibility needs before selecting a title. A documentary made for adults may contain images, language or explanations that are unsuitable for younger viewers. Ask the local child-protection and education partners to review the content, not just the distributor’s short description.

Look for agency and ordinary life

Stories about displacement do not need to center violence to be meaningful. Films showing friendship, school, family life, creativity, work or hopes for the future can support the humanizing purpose described in UNICEF’s film projects. Avoid using a child’s most painful experience solely to provoke an audience reaction.

Plan language and access

Check subtitles, dubbing, interpretation, audio quality and sightlines. Consider hearing, visual, mobility and sensory access when choosing the room and playback format. The sources reviewed do not provide a universal screening checklist, so the responsible protection organization and local authorities should supply the applicable consent, accessibility and safeguarding requirements.

Use content information honestly

Give caregivers and children clear information about themes, distressing images and approximate running time. A warning is not a substitute for age suitability. Offer a quiet alternative space and make it acceptable to leave without explanation.

A practical planning sequence

  1. Set a modest objective. Write one sentence such as “provide a safe shared recreation and discussion activity for children aged 9–12.” Do not write a clinical objective unless qualified professionals and an appropriate intervention are involved.
  2. Coordinate with the accountable organization. Confirm who holds responsibility for child protection, first aid, attendance, incident response and referrals. Obtain local requirements for consent, photography, data collection and supervision.
  3. Review the film in full. Check language, duration, images of violence, disclosures, stereotypes, copyright and whether the story could identify a child or community in an unsafe way.
  4. Prepare the room. Use a location children already recognize where possible. Arrange safe entry and exit, adequate seating, ventilation, power and a quiet area. Keep children with their approved caregivers or supervision groups according to local rules.
  5. Brief facilitators. Explain that children may watch silently, ask questions, leave or decline discussion. Facilitators should acknowledge feelings without diagnosing them and should know the local referral procedure if a child asks for help.
  6. Offer an optional follow-up. Drawing, play, a factual question period or a learning activity lets children process the film without requiring personal testimony. A child who needs specialized support should be referred through the established service, not managed by an untrained projection team.
  7. Review the session. Record attendance and practical incidents only under the approved data rules. Ask children and caregivers whether the timing, language, comfort and accessibility worked. Treat comments as programme feedback, not proof of therapeutic effect.

Two workable screening formats

The evidence does not establish that one format is more effective. Organizers can compare the options against their own capacity and purpose.

Format Typical purpose Questions to resolve What it requires beyond a film file
Film-only recreational screening A short, low-pressure shared activity Is the title suitable for the age group and language? Can children leave safely? Who supervises? Safe venue, functioning playback, responsible adults and a route for concerns
Screening embedded in a child-friendly or learning programme Recreation linked to discussion, learning, play or community participation How does the film connect to the session objective? Which educator or facilitator leads the follow-up? Coordination with the existing programme, facilitator preparation and access to protection or referral services

The second format can make the connection to learning and community participation more explicit, but it also demands more coordination. A film-only event may be simpler to run, yet it still needs safeguarding, age review and a way to respond to a child who needs help.

Equipment and rights: keep logistics proportionate

A portable projector may be useful when a venue lacks a fixed cinema, but the right choice depends on room size, ambient light, power reliability, speaker quality and playback compatibility. The Cinema Al-Za’atari account documents a functioning cinema but does not identify its projector or endorse any equipment. Buying hardware does not itself provide child support.

Confirm public-screening permission before advertising a title. Streaming availability and public-performance rights can change with licensing, and the reviewed UNHCR film guide notes that title availability varies. A community organization should secure permission from the rights holder or use a programme partner that already has the necessary rights.

How to describe results responsibly

Count what the programme actually delivered: sessions held, approximate attendance, age groups reached, languages provided, accessibility arrangements and whether children chose to return. Record practical improvements, such as fewer interruptions or better subtitle visibility. If you collect feedback, explain how it will be used and protect children’s privacy.

Do not convert attendance into a claim that children became safer, less traumatized or healthier. The approximately 10,000 child visits and 20 films reported for Cinema Al-Za’atari are reach measures. A child saying that a film was enjoyable is meaningful feedback about that session, but it is not a clinical outcome. Stronger claims require an appropriate, screening-specific evaluation designed with qualified child-protection and research professionals.

The defensible conclusion

Documentary screenings can be a humane, practical component of support for displaced children when they provide safe recreation, invite learning, build connection and show children as full people rather than headlines. Their value comes from thoughtful selection, competent facilitation and integration with protection, education and psychosocial services. Treat the screening as one activity in that larger system—not as a replacement for it—and the programme can offer children a respectful opportunity to watch, wonder, participate or simply enjoy an evening together.
