A sudden image and burst of sound can trigger an involuntary startle—even when a viewer knows the film is fictional. People differ in how strongly they react, how quickly they recover, and whether they show it outwardly; research has not established a simple explanation for who is least affected.
Why can you jump even when you know it is a movie?
A jump scare typically pairs a sudden visual intrusion with an abrupt sound. That combination can provoke a defensive startle response: blinking, flinching, or a rapid bodily jolt. The reaction is not a considered judgment that the threat is real, so knowing the scene is staged does not necessarily prevent it. A recent discussion of the form describes these bodily responses and stresses that jump scares remain comparatively under-studied experimentally. Acosta and Sears, 2025
Horror also often builds suspense before the sudden event. A review of horror-film research describes the familiar use of a sudden loud sound after silence and summarizes evidence that startle can be stronger in negative or threatening contexts. The setup and anticipation can shape the moment, but they do not make the reflex voluntary. Review of empirical research on psychological responses to horror films, 2019
What does “not scared” actually mean?
People use that phrase for different experiences. One viewer may barely flinch; another may startle but recover quickly; a third may feel the jolt but keep a neutral expression. Someone may also enjoy the rush or be familiar with horror conventions. Those are plausible ways to interpret what a viewer seems to feel, not proven explanations for any particular person’s reaction.

The jolt is different from the suspense
Fear tied to an immediate cue and anxiety about a possible future threat are distinguishable in broader startle research. Predictability and context can matter, so waiting for an uncertain scare may feel different from reacting to the sudden image or sound itself. This framework helps describe different parts of the experience; it does not provide a formula for predicting who will jump at a film. Christian Grillon, “Startle Reactivity and Anxiety Disorders,” 2002
A visible reaction is not a reliable measure
Flinching, feeling frightened, showing it, and settling afterward are separate things. A person who barely moves might still feel tense, while someone who jumps dramatically might recover at once. The evidence does not support labeling a viewer fearless based only on their outward reaction.

Is there a trait or trick that makes some people immune?
No reliable explanation establishes that a particular personality trait makes someone immune to jump scares. A 2019 review discusses possible links between horror enjoyment and characteristics such as sensation seeking, but findings are mixed; enjoyment is not the same as being unable to startle. The reviewed literature also does not justify claims that people who stay calm have a “stronger amygdala,” are simply less anxious, or reliably lose the response by watching more horror.
More broadly, horror-film exposure has not been studied for brain activation in the same way as some other fear-related stimuli, and research focused specifically on the mechanisms of jump scares is limited. These gaps make confident explanations of individual differences unwarranted. 2019 review of empirical research on psychological responses to horror films Acosta and Sears, 2025

How can you make horror easier to watch?
If your aim is simply to make a film night more comfortable, choose a less intense film, keep the volume at a comfortable level, pause or stop when you want, or check content notes for material you prefer to avoid. These are practical viewing choices, not methods shown to eliminate the startle reflex.
Research on how children cope with horror has discussed talking about a fictional scene and reminding oneself that it is staged. That child-focused work should not be treated as proof of a clinical technique or as established evidence about adults. 2019 review of empirical research on psychological responses to horror films

When is fear more than an ordinary movie reaction?
A flinch during a frightening scene is different from fear that is intense and persistent, causes substantial avoidance, or interferes with daily life. For phobias, the National Institute of Mental Health identifies psychotherapy as the primary treatment approach, describes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as well-established and effective for anxiety disorders such as phobias, and says exposure therapy is particularly effective for phobias. If fear is impairing, consult a qualified health professional rather than forcing yourself through frightening content. National Institute of Mental Health, “Phobias and Phobia-Related Disorders”
