Yes—but the method depends on where the movie comes from. Amazon Prime Video supports app-based offline downloads on Windows 10/11 and macOS, while Apple lets you redownload purchased movies in its Mac and Windows apps. Netflix and YouTube generally direct offline downloads to supported phones, tablets or compatible Chromebooks rather than ordinary Windows PCs or Macs.
Most services save an encrypted, app-controlled copy—not a freely transferable MP4. The guide below matches the right method to your device, purchase type and service.
First decide what “download” means
These options are different:
- Subscription download: An encrypted copy available while your subscription and the title’s license remain valid.
- Rental download: A temporary copy governed by the rental’s viewing period.
- Purchased movie: A digital entitlement associated with your retailer account. It may be redownloadable, but it is usually still protected by digital rights management (DRM).
- Digital-copy redemption: A code included with some discs that grants access through an authorized service.
- Ordinary video file: An MP4, MKV or similar file that can be opened in VLC, copied to a USB drive or placed on a media server. Mainstream movie stores generally do not provide this format.
Use official apps and authorized retailers. Torrenting copyrighted films, ripping copy-protected discs, capturing protected streams or using “downloaders” can violate copyright law, service terms and your account security.

Download a movie with Amazon Prime Video
Prime Video’s documentation lists download-capable apps for macOS and Windows 10/11. A title can stream successfully yet lack a download option because of licensing.

- Install and open the official Prime Video app for Windows or macOS.
- Sign in to the Amazon account holding the Prime membership, channel subscription, rental or purchase.
- Find the movie and open its details page.
- Select Download when the title is eligible.
- Choose video quality and a storage location if the app presents those choices.
- Open the app’s Downloads area to watch without internet access.
Labels differ by app version. The download remains subject to account checks and any rental or subscription expiration.
If Download is missing
- Use the official app, not a browser tab.
- Confirm whether the title is included, rented or purchased and whether that version permits downloads.
- Update the app and operating system.
- Free disk space and retry.
- Check whether another device has reached an account download limit.
- Reconnect before a rental or subscription license expires.
Redownload an Apple purchase on a Mac
This procedure applies to movies purchased from Apple, not automatically to every Apple TV+ subscription or third-party Apple TV Channel title.

- Open the Apple TV app.
- Select Library.
- Choose Movies or TV Shows.
- Find the purchased movie.
- Click the Download button.
Apple says purchased media can generally be redownloaded to compatible devices, but country or region and licensing changes can affect availability. Its guidance recommends downloading purchases to a compatible device. See Apple’s availability guidance.

Redownload an Apple purchase on Windows
- Install or open the Apple TV app for Windows.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used for the purchase.
- Open Library and select Movies or TV Shows.
- Hover over the movie or open its More menu.
- Choose Download.
When an Apple purchase is not visible
- Check the signed-in Apple Account and Family Sharing member.
- Authorize the computer if prompted.
- Review purchase history and country or region availability.
- Do not expect the result to open in VLC or copy as an unprotected file.
Why Netflix usually cannot download to a Windows PC or Mac
Netflix’s current list includes Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Amazon Fire tablets and compatible Chromebooks with Google Play. It does not list ordinary Windows PCs or Macs as download devices, and not every title is downloadable.

For Netflix offline viewing, download on a supported phone or tablet, or use a compatible Chromebook. If a computer download is essential, choose a service whose official desktop app supports it, such as Prime Video for an eligible title.
Why a YouTube purchase does not download to your computer
You can buy or rent a YouTube movie on a computer and stream it there. Google’s documented offline procedure uses the YouTube app on iOS or Android; YouTube Premium is not required for purchased content. Current Google rules state that purchases can be downloaded on up to five devices and rentals on one device at a time. See Google’s instructions.

Existing Microsoft Movies & TV purchases
Microsoft no longer sells new movies or TV shows through Microsoft.com, the Microsoft Store on Windows or Xbox. Earlier purchases remain accessible through the Movies & TV app on supported Windows and Xbox devices, including downloaded playback where Microsoft provides it. Do not follow old guides that present Microsoft as a current movie store.

Movies Anywhere
Movies Anywhere is a no-subscription service for U.S. residents age 18 and older. It links eligible purchases from participating retailers, including Apple, Amazon Prime Video, Fandango, Google/YouTube, Xfinity, Verizon Fios TV and DIRECTV. Only qualifying titles and connected accounts transfer, and the service provides app-based access rather than an unrestricted archive. See the retailer list.
DVDs, Blu-rays and digital codes
- A package may include a legitimate digital-copy code. Redeem it using the printed instructions; eligible codes can sometimes be linked through Movies Anywhere.
- An optical drive can play a disc directly, if your computer has compatible playback software.
- Creating a file by bypassing copy protection is a separate legal and technical issue, not a routine authorized download method.
Can you move the download to USB or another computer?
Usually not as a normal file. Platform downloads are commonly tied to your account, encrypted, playable only in the provider’s app and limited by device, title, rental or subscription rules. An external drive can hold an authorized download only when the app supports a selectable location; it does not remove DRM or make the movie universal.

What happens after cancellation or expiration?
- Subscription: Playback generally depends on an active subscription and a current title license.
- Rental: The offline copy expires under the rental’s viewing rules.
- Purchase: Access is treated differently, but still depends on the retailer account, app authorization, region and continuing content availability. “Buy” does not mean DRM-free ownership.

- Are you signed into the account that owns or rents it?
- Is the device supported in your country and operating-system version?
- Is there enough storage?
- Has the account reached a device limit?

- Would a supported phone, tablet or Chromebook solve a service-specific limitation?
