Open the Barnes & Noble NOOK Library, sign in with the same Barnes & Noble account and email address used to buy the book, and select its cover. On a computer, a compatible title opens in NOOK for Web; on an iPhone, iPad, Android device, or supported NOOK reader, open the NOOK app or device Library and download the title for offline reading when available.
Know which Barnes & Noble service holds the book
Your Barnes & Noble account is the login used to purchase and manage digital content. The NOOK Library is the cloud library attached to that account. The Library view inside a NOOK app or eReader is a synchronized version of that account library. NOOK for Web is the browser reader for titles that support it. Barnes & Noble describes purchased digital content as accessible through the account’s NOOK Library; a dedicated NOOK reader is not required. Access the book on a computer
- Go to nook.barnesandnoble.com/my_library/.
- Sign in with the purchasing Barnes & Noble account.
- Select the book cover.
- Read it in NOOK for Web if the title is compatible.
Barnes & Noble lists Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, and Safari for desktop and laptop use. A folded-corner arrow on a cover indicates web-reader compatibility; a sample that will not open in the web reader is another indication that the full title may not support it. Do not plan a new installation around the old NOOK for PC or Mac programs. They are no longer updated. The NOOK for Windows app has not been available for new Microsoft Store downloads since November 29, 2023, although an existing installation may continue to work. Read it on an iPhone or iPad
- Install the free Barnes & Noble NOOK app from the App Store.
- Sign in with the account that bought the eBook.
- Open Library.
- Pull down on the Library screen, or use the app’s sync or refresh control.
- Tap the cover to open or download it.
The App Store listing says B&N purchases appear automatically and that books, bookmarks, notes, and highlights synchronize across devices. For new eBook purchases, Barnes & Noble directs iOS users to buy through bn.com in a browser, then read the purchase in the app; the app is primarily a reading and library client.
Read it on Android
- Install the Barnes & Noble NOOK app on Google Play, if it is offered for your device and region.
- Sign in with the purchasing account.
- Open Library and swipe down to refresh.
- Tap the title to download and read it.
Availability depends on the device, Android version, Google Play access, and region. B&N specifically says the app was pulled from Google Play for certain non-B&N Lenovo M9 tablets with model code TB310FU; consult NOOK App on Non-BN Lenovo 9" Devices if that is your model. For missing books, B&N’s Android troubleshooting guidance includes restarting, signing out and back in, and checking the online Library.

Read it on a NOOK eReader
- Connect the NOOK to Wi-Fi.
- Confirm that it is registered to the Barnes & Noble account that owns the book.
- Open Library and choose All Titles (or the relevant book filter).
- Refresh or synchronize the Library.
- Tap the cover to download and open the book.
On GlowLight devices, the Library includes books bought from the NOOK Shop and synchronizes purchases made on another registered NOOK, phone, or tablet. See NOOK GlowLight Devices – NOOK Library. Some older models need software updates to meet current TLS 1.2 security requirements; the NOOK First Edition is unsupported. If the eBook is missing from the Library
Work through these checks in order:
- Verify the account. Compare the signed-in email with the receipt or order history. A purchase made under another Barnes & Noble account will not normally appear in this Library.
- Show every title. Open Library → All Titles, set the filter to Books, and turn off Only show downloaded items.
- Refresh. Pull down in iOS and Android apps. On many NOOK devices, open the Library menu and choose Refresh. B&N documents this procedure in Trouble Accessing eBooks? Refresh Your Library.
- Check connectivity. Confirm Wi-Fi, permitted cellular data, and available storage.
- Update software. Install the current NOOK app or device software offered for your model.
- Check title compatibility. Review the eBook’s product page if it is absent from a particular reader or browser.
- Compare platforms. Look in the online NOOK Library or another device registered to the same account. If the title is missing everywhere, contact Barnes & Noble support with the account and order details.
If the book appears but will not download
- Internet: NOOK content requires an internet connection for downloading.
- Payment method: B&N’s support procedure says a valid saved card may be required even for an already purchased title. Check the payment method on bn.com.
- Stale local file: Use Archive or Move to Cloud, then download again. This removes the local copy but preserves the account copy for later download; instructions are in All NOOK Devices – Archive/Move to Cloud.
- Preorder: B&N recommends archiving a preorder title and then unarchiving it after release.
- Profile: On a NOOK with multiple profiles, switch to the profile that has access to the purchase.
- Storage or app state: Restart the device or app. Sign-out or reinstallation should be a later step because previously downloaded content may need to be downloaded again, and sideloaded files may need to be added again.
If NOOK for Web will not open the title
Library visibility does not guarantee browser support. Check the cover for the folded-corner compatibility arrow and confirm the product page’s supported formats. If the title is not web-compatible, use the NOOK app on a supported iPhone, iPad, or Android device, or a compatible NOOK eReader. If a title marked as supported fails on several platforms, contact B&N.

Can you export a purchased NOOK book as EPUB or PDF?
Not automatically. Barnes & Noble uses DRM for NOOK content, and DRM-protected purchases must remain within the applicable rights-management system; they are not generally ordinary, freely transferable EPUB or PDF files. NOOK for Web does not support sideloading or transferring eBooks. See Types of eBooks That Can Be Transferred to a NOOK.
Personal or DRM-free files are a separate case. Depending on the model, NOOK devices support EPUB and PDF, NOOK for Android supports EPUB, and NOOK for iOS supports non-DRM EPUB and PDF. Those files do not become part of the ordinary B&N purchase library automatically.

Adobe DRM books from a library or another seller
An Adobe DRM EPUB or PDF obtained from a library, publisher, or third-party store is not accessed like a normal B&N purchase. Barnes & Noble’s procedure uses Adobe Digital Editions: authorize the computer and NOOK, download the supported file, and transfer it. Steps vary by model; on Windows, NOOK HD and NOOK HD+ may require copying the unlocked file manually into the device’s MyFiles folder. Follow Transfer eBooks with Adobe DRM.

When to contact Barnes & Noble
Escalate after confirming the purchasing email, checking the online NOOK Library, removing download-only filters, refreshing, verifying connectivity and payment information, and trying a supported platform. If the title is absent from the account library everywhere, or a supposedly compatible title fails across devices, provide B&N support with the order number, account email, device model, app or software version, and the exact error message.
