Spoilers for The Diplomat Season 1 and the opening of Season 2. Season 1 ends with Kate Wyler and Austin Dennison suspecting that British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge arranged the attack on HMS Courageous—and with a car bomb exploding as Hal Wyler, Stuart Hayford and Ronnie Buckhurst reach Merritt Grove. The finale does not reveal who survives. Season 2’s premiere confirms that Grove dies and the three Americans survive.
What happens in The Diplomat Season 1 finale?
In Paris, Kate and British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison are trying to secure French help to capture Roman Lenkov, whom they believe is connected to the attack on the British warship HMS Courageous. Kate discovers that the British operation is meant to kill Lenkov, not capture him for questioning. That changes the stakes: she and Dennison begin to suspect that Trowbridge hired Lenkov to attack Britain’s own ship.
Back in London, Merritt Grove—a man with ties to the Tory party and the affair—agrees to meet Hal. Stuart and Ronnie try to reach Grove before Hal does. The episode cuts between Kate’s realization in Paris and the meeting in London. Grove storms out to his car; Stuart and Ronnie approach from one side, Hal from the other, and the car explodes.
The blast cuts the season off before the show confirms anyone’s fate. The political revelation is also still a suspicion, not a proven case: Kate must find evidence that Trowbridge ordered the attack. Creator Debora Cahn described the turn this way: “Season 1 ended with Kate’s (Keri Russell) realization that the attack on a British warship [that] brought her to the UK wasn’t the work of a hostile nation — it was the British prime minister,” she told Netflix Tudum. “Now she has to prove it.” Netflix Tudum

What the ending leaves unanswered
Who ordered the car bombing?
The official Season 1 recap establishes that Grove’s car explodes, but it does not identify who arranged the bombing. The cited recap of Season 2’s first episode confirms the casualties without settling the perpetrator’s identity. The suspected plot against HMS Courageous and the car bombing are separate unanswered questions; the former does not, by itself, identify the person behind the latter.
What does the final radio exchange mean?
The end-credit audio features a cryptic exchange: “Any station, this channel, this is Dolphin 3-6, transmitting in the blind,” followed by “We suspected comms failure” and “Nothing heard. Out.” Netflix’s recap raises possible interpretations but does not confirm what the transmission means. It remains a clue, not a solved explanation. Netflix Tudum’s Season 1 recap
