She and Mistle, one of the group, receive matching roses as a mark of their connection. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt later alludes to the tattoo in a brief sauna-scene exchange, but does not tell the full story—and the novels’ account is more complicated than a simple romance token.
How Ciri gets the rose tattoo in the books
During a dangerous and unsettled period of her life, Ciri falls in with a band of young outlaws known as the Rats. Mistle is one of them and becomes closely connected to Ciri. In The Tower of the Swallow, a tattooist named Almavera gives both women the same rose: red, with a green stem and two leaves. The mark is placed on the thigh near the groin, according to the Witcher reference pages on Almavera and Mistle.
The tattoo serves as a memento of Ciri and Mistle’s bond. Before Ciri leaves the Rats, she gets the matching mark and promises to return for Mistle.
Why the tattoo’s backstory is complicated
The connection between Ciri and Mistle develops in a violent, coercive setting, not as a straightforward courtship. After another Rat tries to assault Ciri, Mistle takes advantage of her. That context matters: the tattoo can signify a bond and remain meaningful to Ciri without turning the circumstances around their relationship into an uncomplicated romance.

What The Witcher 3 says about it
In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the tattoo comes up briefly during Ciri’s sauna scene in Skellige. She can describe it as a memory of someone special who died. The line points toward the novel backstory, but the game does not identify Mistle or recount Ciri’s time with the Rats in detail.
In a 2019 interview with PC Gamer, CD Projekt Red writer Jakub Szamałek explained the omission: “There wasn’t really space for unpacking this complex episode in the Wild Hunt—and it’s a shame.” The interview discusses the tattoo in connection with Mistle and Ciri’s story in the saga: Szamałek on Ciri’s rose tattoo.

Novel story versus game callback
| Version | What it explains | How it frames the tattoo |
|---|---|---|
| The novels | Ciri’s time with the Rats, her connection with Mistle, and the matching tattoo. | A memento formed in a complicated relationship shaped by coercion and violence. |
| The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt | A brief reference to someone special who died; it does not retell the episode. | A subdued clue for players who may not know the novels. |
Where to read the full story
The tattooist Almavera and the matching rose are associated with The Tower of the Swallow. For the full context, read Ciri’s story in the Witcher novels rather than relying on the game’s short allusion.
