The 2019 award that expanded his capacity
Rogers won the top prize at the 2019 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. British Vogue reported the prize as $400,000 at the time; it is a historical award figure, not a statement of the fund’s current value. In a 2022 Vogue interview with Alina Cho, Rogers described that balance as “pragmatic glamour,” explaining that he wants to make work that lets people express themselves in the real world. His work also crossed into other institutions and formats. Vogue reported that he collaborated with Target, created costumes for New York City Ballet, and had a design included in the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute exhibition “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” These projects extended his audience through accessible retail, live performance, and fashion history. How has his design approach changed?
Rogers has not treated his early success as a formula he must repeat unchanged. A 2020 Vogue profile described him reassessing the balance between flamboyant pieces and practical clothing. In 2025, he spoke about making room for more everyday shirts, trousers, and sweaters alongside gowns, without abandoning color and expressive shape.
His label also adjusted its rhythm during a five-year hiatus from the New York Fashion Week schedule, developing a pre-season knitwear cadence. Vogue Business reported that Rogers returned to the schedule in February 2025 with “015: Exhale,” a personal collection less concerned with performing fixed “house codes.” In that coverage he said, “I’m being Christopher,” and described a changed relationship to presenting work: “I’m not holding my breath anymore.” The shift suggests a designer refining how and when the work is shown, rather than simply repeating the runway spectacle that first attracted attention. Why does his prominence matter?
Rogers’s career illustrates how a strong visual signature can travel across different settings without being reduced to one red-carpet image. His work has moved from an SCAD thesis collection to celebrity dressing, awards, retail collaboration, ballet costumes, and a museum exhibition.
