Brad Pitt and Edward Norton said they connected quickly while making Fight Club and had an easy, collaborative rapport on set. Pitt recalled that Norton invited him for a drink early in the process and that they were immediately on the same page. Their comments support a close working relationship during filming—not a definitive account of how close they stayed privately afterward.
Did Brad Pitt and Edward Norton get along on the set of Fight Club?
Yes, by their own account. In an October 1999 interview with the Toronto Sun, Pitt said they sat down together at the beginning of the production, Norton called him for a drink, and they were immediately on the same page. Pitt noted that their rapport mattered because their characters had to play close together: “it would’ve definitely gotten in the way if we didn’t get along.” Norton replied, “We were lucky.” The exchange is preserved in an archived interview excerpt.
The comments point to an easy connection and a practical benefit: scenes requiring closeness were easier to play when the actors trusted one another. They establish how Pitt and Norton described their working relationship at the time, rather than the extent of any private friendship beyond the film.
Did they hurt each other while filming the fight scenes?
Asked about that in a 2011 interview with Terry Gross, Pitt said, “No. I don’t think so. I mean, we mainly just had a laugh.” That answer suggests the physical scenes were not, in his recollection, a source of serious trouble between them. It is Pitt’s recollection—not proof that no accidental bump or mishap ever happened during production.

What did Norton remember about their final night on set?
A 2019 Ringer retrospective reports that Norton worked on the film for 129 days. He remembered spending the final night with Pitt listening to Radiohead’s OK Computer and trying to recall the early days of filming. Norton described the memories as “like they were dreams we were collectively trying to remember.” The account gives a sense of how immersive the production felt to him, while remaining Norton’s recollection as reported by The Ringer.
How did the film’s production shape their working relationship?
The same retrospective describes Norton and director David Fincher debating the film’s tone during the early office-life scenes and continuing those conversations throughout the shoot. Norton wanted audiences to recognize the comedy, while Fincher did not want the film to wink at them. That detail shows the production involved candid creative discussion, but it concerns Norton and Fincher; it is not evidence of a dispute between Norton and Pitt.
