Hart later said the stroke paralyzed the left side of his body and left him with permanent effects. Those accounts establish the reported sequence and his experience; they do not establish the medical mechanism that caused the stroke.
What happened before Bret Hart’s stroke?
Canada’s Walk of Fame places Hart’s stroke in June 2002 and reports that he hit his head in a bicycle accident beforehand. That is the clearest biographical account of the circumstances. It does not, by itself, prove that the head impact caused the stroke.
What did Hart say the stroke did to him?
On his official website, Hart wrote: “That was followed by a stroke that paralyzed the entire left side of my body.” He described his recovery as the toughest fight of his life and said he continues to experience permanent effects. These are Hart’s own retrospective descriptions, not an independent clinical report. Bret Hart’s official website
Is the medical cause known?
The cited biographical accounts do not identify the stroke subtype, provide medical records, or establish a clinical explanation linking the bicycle accident and head impact to the stroke. The careful distinction is that the accident and stroke are reported in sequence, while the precise medical cause is not established by these sources.

How did the stroke affect Hart’s wrestling career?
WWE’s biography of Bret Hart says that a severe injury in 2000, together with the stroke in 2002, forced him to retire from full-time in-ring competition. The 2000 injury and the later bicycle accident are separate events; the career-ending context should not be mistaken for one continuous incident.
