Spoilers for the full Season 2 finale and its mid-credits scene. Gi-hun’s armed rebellion fails, and Front Man—who has been posing as Player 001, Young-il—kills Gi-hun’s friend Jung-bae in front of him. Gi-hun ends the season grieving and unaware of Young-il’s betrayal. The brief mid-credits scene teases another game, but does not explain what comes next.
How does the Season 2 finale unfold?
Gi-hun’s last attempt to stop the competition is an uprising against its guards and organizers. The rebellion falters, the guards regain control, and the players’ effort to break free ends in defeat. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk later described the tracking-device plan, the vote to leave, and the armed rebellion as successive failed attempts to end the games.
During the revolt, Gi-hun trusts Player 001, Young-il, as an ally. The audience learns that Young-il is actually Front Man, who entered the competition under a false identity and is directing the violence. Gi-hun does not recognize who he is by the end of the season.
After the rebellion is crushed, Front Man shoots Jung-bae in front of Gi-hun. The killing turns the uprising’s failure into a personal loss: Jung-bae was one of the people Gi-hun trusted, and his death directly challenges Gi-hun’s belief that he can save the other players. Netflix’s retrospective on the finale says Hwang saw Jung-bae as sharing Gi-hun’s earlier optimism.

What does the ending leave Gi-hun facing?
Gi-hun is left in shock and despair. Netflix’s retrospective says he blames himself and has lost both allies and his friend. Actor Lee Jung-jae said Jung-bae’s death raises the question of whether Gi-hun can preserve his goal of saving others. The finale leaves that question unresolved: will Gi-hun continue trying to persuade players to leave together, or come to share Front Man’s belief that nothing can change?
That contrast is central to the cliffhanger. Gi-hun has tried collective persuasion and then armed resistance; both have failed. Front Man represents a different conclusion—that change is impossible. At the same time, the audience knows the ally beside Gi-hun was Front Man, while Gi-hun does not. The season ends with that betrayal still hidden from its protagonist.

What does the mid-credits scene mean?
The short clip shows three players, Young-hee, a mysterious boy doll, and a green light. It signals the prospect of another game, but the image alone does not explain its rules or what role the boy doll will play. In a December 2024 interview with Variety, Hwang said the hidden clip was meant to offer “a slight hint as to where Season 3 might take you.” It is a teaser, not a full explanation of what follows.
Why does Season 2 stop at this point?
Hwang told Variety that the material for Seasons 2 and 3 began as one longer story. He had planned roughly eight or nine episodes, but the story grew beyond ten—too long, in his view, for one season. He wanted an ending that could give Season 2 closure before the story continued. He also described this stopping point as the moment when Gi-hun’s efforts to stop the games had all failed.

The result is a season-ending turning point rather than the resolution of Gi-hun’s larger struggle. His rebellion is defeated, Jung-bae is dead, and Gi-hun has yet to discover who betrayed him. The series’ later events are outside the cliffhanger the Season 2 finale leaves behind.
What are the biggest bombshells?
- Young-il is Front Man. He adopted the Player 001 identity and concealed his real role from Gi-hun.
- Jung-bae is killed. Front Man shoots him after the rebellion fails, leaving Gi-hun to witness the loss.
- Gi-hun’s attempts to stop the games have failed. The vote and the uprising do not end the competition; Hwang also identified the tracking-device plan as an earlier failed attempt.
- The mid-credits clip points toward another game. Hwang called it a hint toward Season 3, not a complete explanation.
How many people voted to leave?
Netflix Tudum’s November 26, 2025 finale retrospective says 182 players voted to leave during the first vote. That is an in-story count reported by Netflix Tudum, not an external statistic.
