BioWare’s answer is that Dragon Age: The Veilguard keeps faith with the series through unresolved mysteries, returning characters and companion stories, while changing its protagonist, setting and combat approach. In a September 19, 2024, io9 interview, game director Corrinne Busche and producer Jen Cheverie described those choices as a way to connect the game to the franchise and welcome new or returning players. Their comments explain the team’s intent; they are not a verdict on how every player will experience the finished game.
What BioWare means by “true to Dragon Age”
Busche describes Dragon Age as a series that changes its central character and locations from game to game, but carries unresolved mysteries forward. For The Veilguard, the team wanted to address the looming danger established in Inquisition while making a new character and another part of the world the focus.
In that account, continuity is not simply repeating a previous game’s structure. It comes from following long-running story questions, bringing selected characters and elements back, and developing companions—all while making choices suited to this story and its development context.
How Rook and the opening are meant to welcome players
A protagonist players can shape
Cheverie says the team paid deliberate attention to the character creator, including hairstyles and complexion, so players could create a Rook they wanted to see. That emphasis makes the new lead a point of entry into the story rather than a continuation of one of the earlier games’ protagonists.

An opening that starts with the immediate stakes
Busche says the first hours focus on establishing who Solas is, what the player needs to do next, and why Rook should continue. She also says that longtime lore threads receive new information as the game progresses. The approach is intended to give newcomers a starting point without abandoning players who have followed the series.
Which earlier Dragon Age games influenced its design?
Busche points to specific precedents rather than claiming that every past feature returns. She describes the team’s guiding question as: “Was this right for the story, and how would it help us?” The interview connects The Veilguard to earlier entries in these ways:

The interview also raises whether the game borrowed too much from Mass Effect. Busche’s answer is a general design test—whether a feature served the story and fit the environment and team—not a detailed feature-by-feature comparison between the two franchises.
Why Northern Thedas, Tevinter and Harding matter
The developers wanted to explore Northern Thedas, including Tevinter. The interview also points to a mix of new and returning companions. Busche says Harding’s return responded to players’ interest and gave the team a chance to develop her story and dwarven history.

Cheverie summed up her reaction to the game by saying, “This feels like Dragon Age, this is it.” That is a producer’s account of the team’s result, not independent evidence that all players will agree. The interview documents development intent and examples of influence; it does not measure player reception or score the game against earlier entries.
