A later educational account also remembers a kind teacher who encouraged him—but it does not name that teacher, so the story should be told with care.
What was Dr. Ambedkar like as a child?
Bhimrao was born on 14 April 1891 in Mhow, in what is now Madhya Pradesh. His father, Ramji Maloji Sakpal, served as a Subedar in the British Army. His mother died when Bhimrao was about six, and his aunt cared for him afterward, according to the Press Information Bureau’s biography published on 13 April 2024.
As a child, he was known as Bhimrao; later, he became widely known as B. R. Ambedkar. The available accounts describe his schooling and the obstacles he faced, but do not establish details such as his daily home routines or private thoughts.
Where did Ambedkar go to school?
He completed primary schooling in Satara and went on to secondary school at Elphinstone High School in Bombay, now Mumbai, according to the Supreme Court of India’s biographical page. The Government of India’s Ambedkar writings portal reports that he passed the matriculation examination in 1907, an important milestone in his education.

What difficulties did Ambedkar face at school?
Ambedkar belonged to a Scheduled Caste and faced significant discrimination in education. In his autobiographical note Waiting for a Visa, as summarized by the Supreme Court, he recalled that he could not drink from the school’s common tap unless a peon helped him. The remembered words were “no peon, no water.”
This was exclusion imposed by the school’s caste rules and practices, not something Bhimrao had done. It also does not mean that every teacher treated him in the same way: discrimination was part of the unequal system, while individual adults could respond differently.
Who was Ambedkar’s teacher?
An IGNOU educational chapter recounts that a Brahmin teacher liked young Bhimrao’s honesty and intelligence, shared food with him, and encouraged him to work hard and aim high. The chapter excerpt does not give the teacher’s name. Since other summaries give differing names and the available evidence does not settle the question, it is more accurate to describe him as an unnamed teacher remembered in that account.
Did a teacher give Ambedkar his surname?
The same IGNOU account links Bhimrao’s adoption of the surname Ambedkar to his affection and respect for that teacher. This is an attributed account, not a detail independently confirmed here by a school record. It is safest to share it as a story the educational chapter tells, without treating the teacher’s identity or the surname’s origin as proven beyond doubt.

How did his schooling continue?
