Bill Hader did not move to Los Angeles planning to become a performer. He went there to write and direct, taking production-assistant jobs to learn how film sets worked. The turning point came when he saw people his age performing sketch comedy and improv—and decided to step onto the stage himself. Second City led to a recommendation from Megan Mullally, auditions for Lorne Michaels, and a place on Saturday Night Live. Later, Barry brought his original filmmaking ambitions together with his work as an actor, writer, producer, and director.

What did Bill Hader want to do when he first moved to Los Angeles?

Hader’s first goal was to work behind the camera. In an interview with the Television Academy, he described moving from Tulsa to Los Angeles hoping to become a writer and director. He said he was 20 when he began working as a production assistant: “I was 20, and I started P.A.-ing to get set experience.” The Television Academy’s account of that early period is available at its interview with Hader.

The work gave him a way onto film and television sets, but it was not the same as making the creative decisions he had hoped to make. Hader has said that his interest in directing began much earlier: in a 2022 interview, he recalled noticing directors’ names in film credits when he was about 10 or 11. The Credits dates his move to Los Angeles to 1999, while the Television Academy interview gives his age when he started PA work; the accounts do not establish a more exact month-by-month timeline.

How did Hader go from production work to performing?

A performance at Second City L.A. made Hader reconsider the distance between working on a set and creating something himself. He saw peers doing sketch comedy and improv and thought, “Oh, my God. There are all these people my age performing sketch comedy and improv. Why am I not doing this?” That moment changed the direction of his career: he began taking improv classes at Second City in Hollywood and joined its troupe in 2003, according to The Credits’ 2022 profile.

Performing was not a straight-line replacement for his filmmaking ambitions. It was an opportunity to develop comic characters and collaborate in a live setting, while the writing and directing interests he had brought to Los Angeles remained part of his longer-term creative life.

How did Bill Hader get hired by Saturday Night Live?

Actress Megan Mullally saw Hader perform and recommended him to Saturday Night Live creator and producer Lorne Michaels. In a 2019 Q&A account from the New York Film Academy, Hader recalled that he had no manager or agent when he met Michaels. He auditioned four or five times before getting the job. His description makes the distinction clear: Mullally’s recommendation opened a door, but it did not bypass the audition process. The account is at NYFA’s report on Hader’s appearance.

Joining SNL gave Hader a national platform for the character work he had developed through sketch and improv. His performances included Stefon, the nightlife correspondent he created with writer John Mulaney. The show made him widely recognizable, but it was one stage in a career that continued to expand into other kinds of writing and performance.

What did Hader do beyond SNL?

During his SNL years, Hader also wrote for and contributed voices to South Park. The work broadened his experience beyond performing live sketch characters: it included writing and voice performance for an animated series. The Television Academy’s Hader profile documents his work across these roles as well as his later television career.

The move from ensemble cast member to a broader creative lead came with Barry. Hader co-created the HBO dark comedy with Alec Berg and starred in it, then took on writing, executive-producing, and directing responsibilities. The Television Academy dates the series’ start to March 2018. Its profile records three Emmy wins and 29 nominations for Hader across his career as of the page accessed in 2026; those totals can change as the Academy updates its records. The profile also records lead-actor wins for Barry in 2018 and 2019.

Why did Hader’s career take off?

His rise was not a simple overnight-discovery story. Hader spent years working on sets while pursuing writing and directing, then made a deliberate shift toward performance after seeing a route into sketch comedy. A recommendation helped him get in front of Michaels, and several auditions came before the SNL job. That combination of experience, opportunity, and sustained work—not a single lucky break—helps explain the progression.

Just as important, Hader’s later career did not leave his original ambitions behind. Barry let him combine the performance path that began at Second City with the writing and directing interests that had taken him to Los Angeles in the first place. His story is less a change from filmmaker to actor than an expansion of the ways he could make a project.
