You can have them wrapped individually around braids or crochet premade locs onto a braided base. Plan conservatively for four to six weeks of wear, care for the scalp and keep tension comfortable, and remove the style sooner if it causes irritation or discomfort.
What are butterfly locs?
Butterfly locs are a textured faux-loc style distinguished by loose loops in the hair wrapped around each loc. The loops make the finish less uniform than traditional faux locs and give it a relaxed, distressed appearance. “Distressed” describes the intentionally lived-in texture of the style, not damage to your natural hair. Butterfly locs can be made in different lengths and sizes, with a look that sits between structured faux locs and looser passion-twist or boho styles.
Hairstylist Antoine McCants describes the appeal this way: “Butterfly locs have been characterized as a natural style that say ‘neat isn’t the only way to show beauty.’” NewBeauty
Which installation method should you choose?
| Method | How it works | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Individual braid and wrap | Natural hair is sectioned and braided, then textured extension hair is attached and wrapped around each braid, leaving loops along the loc. | Choose this if you want individual shaping and a wrapped finish. Water wave braiding hair is commonly used. |
| Crochet | Natural hair is braided, often into cornrows, and premade locs are attached with a crochet hook. | Choose this if you prefer premade locs and an install that sources describe as quicker; actual time varies. |
Individual wrapping gives the stylist more opportunity to shape each loc, but takes time. Hairstylist Joseph estimates four to eight hours for a braid-and-wrap installation, depending on loc size and length, the wearer’s hair length and density, and head size, according to Women’s Health. Crochet avoids wrapping every loc from scratch, but the sources do not establish a dependable time estimate for every crochet install. Either method should feel comfortable rather than painfully tight. If you are unsure which foundation suits your hair or how to install the style without excess tension, consult a stylist experienced with faux locs. NewBeauty’s interviewed stylist also recommends professional installation and removal.

What hair and supplies do you need?
For individual wrapping
Look for “water wave braiding hair for butterfly locs.” Its texture helps create the loose loops that define the style. Carol’s Daughter estimates six to eight packs for a full head; Makeup.com’s stylist source describes six to eight packs at roughly 22–28 inches for its individual method. Treat these as shopping estimates, not fixed requirements: length, loc size, fullness, and your natural hair affect how much is needed. Carol’s Daughter and Makeup.com
Some methods use optional Marley braiding hair to add length or thickness. Check the chosen method’s instructions before buying; the materials and finishing steps are not identical for every technique.

How should you prepare your hair?
- Begin with clean, conditioned, detangled hair so the foundation is easier to section and braid.
- Blow-drying is not a universal requirement; follow your stylist’s guidance for your hair and the selected technique.
- Prioritize a comfortable foundation. An interviewed stylist advises using small pieces and avoiding locs that feel stiff, bulky, tight, or painful.
- If your hair is weak or highly damaged, consider whether it can comfortably bear the weight and tension of synthetic extensions. A scalp condition is also a reason to seek individualized advice before installing the style.
How are butterfly locs installed?
The precise wrapping and finishing details differ by technique. For individual wrapping, the general sequence is:

- Section and braid the prepared natural hair into the desired foundation.
- Attach water wave extension hair at the root, typically by braiding or crocheting it into the foundation.
- Wrap firmly enough to secure the root, then more loosely along the length to create the characteristic loops. A stylist may wrap over a thumb or leave intentional spaces to form them.
- Finish the ends using the selected technique’s instructions.
Do not assume every method requires hot-water dipping or adhesive. One guide describes a wrap pattern that does not need hot-water sealing, but that is specific to its method, not a universal finishing rule.
How do you care for butterfly locs while wearing them?
- Clean the scalp as needed. Keep the parts accessible and use a gentle cleaning method. Published guidance differs on washing frequency and technique, so there is no single schedule that applies to everyone.
- Dry thoroughly after washing. Moisture can remain trapped in locs, warns a stylist quoted by Women’s Health; allow the style to dry fully.
- Use products sparingly. A light oil or serum on the scalp parts is optional. Heavy application can contribute to buildup.
- Protect the style during sleep. Cover the locs with a bonnet or scarf, or use a silk pillowcase to reduce friction and frizz.
- Limit pulling and manipulation. Avoid repeatedly handling the locs or wearing styles that tug on them or the hairline.
- Respond to discomfort. If irritation or discomfort develops, take the locs down rather than trying to endure it.
Butterfly locs do not guarantee hair growth or eliminate the risks associated with tension, excess weight, buildup, or rough removal.

How long should you keep butterfly locs in?
Published wear guidance ranges from four weeks or longer to eight to twelve weeks, so there is no agreed duration. For cautious planning, Carol’s Daughter recommends four to six weeks. Women’s Health reports four to eight weeks as a usual appearance window and advises against keeping the style longer than eight weeks. Makeup.com reports eight to twelve weeks, a longer estimate than those recommendations. These are editorial or stylist recommendations, not clinical findings or guarantees.
Take the style down sooner if you develop irritation or discomfort, feel persistent tension, or have substantial new growth at the roots. The condition of your scalp and hair matters more than reaching a particular week.

How do you take butterfly locs out?
Work slowly so you do not mistake extension hair for your own. If you cannot clearly identify where your natural hair ends, or the locs are tangled, have a stylist remove them.
Quick Recap
- Locate the foundation braid and identify where your natural hair ends before cutting anything.
- Cut only the extension hair, keeping scissors well away from your natural hair.
- Unravel the extension from the ends, taking your time rather than pulling or yanking.
- Unbraid the natural hair once the extension is removed.
- Detangle gently. A little oil or conditioner can add slip while you work through shed hair and tangles.
