How AI Soul Remixes Are Gentrifying Hip-Hop

The “BBL Drizzy” remix wave raises questions about who creates, controls and benefits when AI brings soul-inspired sounds into hip-hop. Gentrification is a cultural frame here, not a proven finding of displacement.

AI soul remixes are not proven to be displacing hip-hop artists or communities. But the 2024 “BBL Drizzy” remix wave makes a sharper question possible: when AI helps turn a Black musical style into widely shared content, who gets to create, control, credit and profit from it—and does the history behind that style stay visible?

What “gentrifying” means in this debate

Here, “gentrifying” is a cultural metaphor, not a measured finding of economic displacement. It describes a possible shift in visibility, control and value: musical traditions formed by Black artists and communities may become newly accessible to creators and audiences while their connection to those histories becomes less legible, or while new intermediaries gain influence.

That framing raises a question; it does not settle the answer. A soul-inspired sound by itself does not prove that a creator copied a particular recording, violated a right or intended appropriation. The more useful test is how a remix was made and circulated, and who benefits from that process. Scholarship on AI music warns that unequal power can leave artists with fewer legal and label resources more exposed to appropriation and loss of cultural integrity. “From deepfaking to deeptaking: cultural appropriation in AI music” develops that concern; it is a framework for analysis, not proof that every AI use harms Black creators.

What happened with “BBL Drizzy”

During the 2024 Drake–Kendrick Lamar feud, comedian Will Hatcher, who performs as King Willonius, released “BBL Drizzy,” an AI-assisted soul-styled parody. TIME reports that Hatcher wrote the lyrics and used AI music tools to make versions in several genres; the song then prompted people to post remixes, rap verses, guitar solos and dances. TIME’s profile of Willonius Hatcher describes his work and the response.

RØDE NT1 Signature Series Studio Condenser Microphone, Black
  • COMPLETE VOCAL SETUP: shock mount, pop filter and XLR cable included, add an interface and record
  • THE SOUND OF HIT RECORDS: the legendary NT1 large-diaphragm condenser voicing trusted in studios for two decades
  • WHISPER-QUIET: among the lowest self-noise microphones ever made, nothing between you and the take
  • BUILT FOR VOCALS AND STREAMS: tight cardioid pattern focuses on the voice, rejects the room
  • IN THE BOX: NT1 Signature (Black), SM6 shock mount with pop filter, XLR cable and dust cover

WLRN similarly reports that Hatcher wrote the lyrics while AI software composed the music. Producer Metro Boomin used the song in an instrumental, which helped spur further remixes. WLRN’s account of the song’s circulation places it within the online response to the feud. The important distinction is that this was not an entirely machine-made work: human lyrics, AI-generated musical material and later human reuse all formed part of the story.

How access and appropriation can coexist

Lowering barriers to making music

Hatcher told TIME that AI tools let creators make work without assembling the traditional resources or collaborators. That can widen participation: a person can experiment with a musical idea without first having a studio team, instrumentalists or production budget.

Unequal power over reuse and reward

Easier creation does not answer who controls the material being reused, who receives credit or compensation, or who gains the audience. The scholarly concern is not that all AI music is inherently appropriative; it is that artists with less institutional, legal or financial support may be less able to contest uses or share in their value. A remix can invite broad fan participation and still leave control concentrated elsewhere.

Context matters, too. Online hip-hop has long been shaped by changing technologies and debates over appropriation. The chapter “Conclusion: It’s Where You’re @” in Digital Flows: Online Hip Hop Music and Culture offers background on those debates. It does not establish that AI soul remixes have caused displacement.

Five questions to ask about an AI or fan remix

  1. Who made what? Separate human-written lyrics, performance and editing from model-generated music, voices or other material. “AI-assisted” is more informative than calling a mixed human-and-model process wholly machine-made.
  2. What source material was used? Ask whether the remix uses an existing recording, lyrics or a recognizable voice, and whether that use was authorized. A stylistic resemblance alone does not establish that a specific recording was copied.
  3. How is the work labeled and attributed? Disclosure helps listeners understand the process. Attribution should make the human creators and any source artists visible rather than obscuring them behind the tool or platform.
  4. Who controls distribution and receives compensation? Consider who can authorize reuse, remove a version, monetize it or negotiate its terms—and whether creators whose work or labor contributed to the result benefit.
  5. Does the cultural context remain legible? Ask whether a work acknowledges the communities and histories associated with the musical tradition it draws on, rather than presenting that tradition as a context-free sound.

Why licensing changes the comparison

Not all remix routes are the same. A fan-made remix, an AI-assisted work and a licensed opt-in remix can differ in what material was used, who authorized it and how rewards are distributed. The available evidence does not establish current terms for any named commercial service, so a platform’s catalog, permissions and payment arrangements should be checked directly before relying on them.

Luminate’s March 2026 report describes licensed remix models built around opted-in songs and artist remuneration. That category offers a contrast with reuse whose authorization or payment is unclear; it is not evidence that every licensed model pays fairly or that a specific service is currently available. MIDiA Research has also framed fan modification of existing works as a potential opportunity for music platforms, an industry perspective rather than proof of artist benefit or broad consumer demand. MIDiA’s “BBL Drizzy” analysis discusses that framing.

What the “BBL Drizzy” case does—and does not—show

The case documents AI-assisted music entering a hip-hop event and a fan remix cycle. It also shows that human authorship remained present: Hatcher wrote lyrics, and listeners and artists made and circulated further versions. It does not, on its own, prove that AI soul remixes are economically displacing Black musicians, that a particular historical soul recording was copied, or that every participant intended appropriation. Legal questions around the case are distinct from those cultural questions; the Loyola University Chicago Law Journal’s 2026 discussion of “Striking the Perfect Chord” provides a legal framing.

The most grounded conclusion is therefore conditional: AI can lower barriers to making and sharing music, while leaving unresolved who controls, authorizes and benefits from reuse. Whether that pattern resembles cultural gentrification depends on those specific relationships—not simply on the presence of AI or a soul-inspired sound.
