The headline “Fake celebrity porn is blowing up on Reddit, thanks to artificial intelligence” described a fast-growing online phenomenon in January 2018—not a new 2026 trend. It referred to videos that used machine-learning face swaps to place real women’s faces onto performers in pornographic footage, without their consent. Reddit shut down the community that helped popularize the practice weeks later. The underlying abuse, however, did not end with one subreddit.
What the 2018 headline was about
The headline appeared in The Verge on January 24, 2018, during the first major public wave of what became known as deepfake pornography. A Reddit user posting under the name “deepfakes” shared videos that mapped celebrity faces onto people already appearing in pornographic scenes. Other users copied the approach, and dedicated communities formed around the results.

The defining issue was consent: the people whose faces were used had not agreed to be depicted in sexual activity. Calling a video “fake” does not make that violation imaginary or harmless.

What the technology did—and did not do
The early videos were generally face swaps, not entirely computer-generated scenes. Existing footage supplied the bodies, movement and sexual activity; images of a target supplied facial reference material. Machine-learning systems helped synthesize a replacement face across video frames, with editing and compression sometimes making the result harder to scrutinize.
That distinction matters because “AI porn” now describes several different things. Traditional editing uses manual compositing or conventional visual effects. A deepfake is a broader category of manipulated or synthetic media, often made with machine learning. Face swapping replaces one person’s face in existing footage. “Nudification” tools attempt to create nude imagery from clothed photographs. Fully generated images may depict people who do not exist, though a synthetic person can still resemble a real individual.
These methods are not interchangeable, and no single label tells you how an image was made. The technology’s significance in 2018 was less that it invented sexual image manipulation than that it lowered the skill and effort needed to make a plausible face swap. It did not mean every user could make a convincing video, or that every clip would fool close inspection.

Why celebrities were the first visible targets
Famous people were convenient targets because the internet held abundant photographs and video of them: faces in different poses, lighting and angles. Their features were recognizable, and audiences were already interested in them. That combination made celebrity face swaps easier to assemble and more likely to attract attention.

But the celebrity focus hid a more serious risk. Private individuals—classmates, coworkers, former partners and children—may have fewer resources to identify a fake, challenge its circulation or manage the consequences. A false sexual depiction can fuel humiliation, harassment, stalking or blackmail, and victims may struggle to persuade others that the material is fabricated. The harm does not depend on a clip being perfect; even a visibly synthetic image can be used to shame or threaten someone.
“Nonconsensual intimate imagery” is often the more precise term for this abuse. It covers the central problem—the lack of consent—whether the material is a face-swapped video, an edited photograph or a newly generated image. “Revenge porn” is not a universal synonym: it can imply a former relationship or retaliatory motive that may not exist.
Reddit’s role—and the limits of a ban
Reddit helped the early practice spread through pseudonymous accounts, focused communities, voting and visibility, reposting and cross-linking. It was not the sole cause. The tools, image hosts, file-sharing networks and later specialist sites also formed part of the distribution ecosystem.
Removing r/deepfakes disrupted one prominent venue; it could not erase copies hosted elsewhere or prevent activity from moving to other services. Modern Reddit policy prohibits nonconsensual intimate media, including AI-generated and digitally altered material. The platform also provides U.S.-specific guidance on the TAKE IT DOWN Act. A subreddit ban, a platform rule or a single post removal is not the same as eliminating an abuse that can be recreated and redistributed.

What U.S. law provides now
The federal TAKE IT DOWN Act became law on May 19, 2025. It criminalizes intentional online publication of certain nonconsensual intimate visual depictions, including qualifying digital forgeries, in the circumstances set out in the statute. It also requires covered platforms that host user-generated content to provide a notice-and-removal process.
The platform provisions became enforceable on May 19, 2026. After a valid request under the law, covered platforms generally must remove the reported material and identical copies within 48 hours. The obligation is not a promise that every copy on the internet will disappear: it applies to covered platforms and qualifying requests, not automatically to every search result, foreign host, encrypted group, mirror or new version. The criminal provisions and the platform-removal process are separate parts of the law; it is too broad to say the Act bans every private act of creating an AI-generated sexual image.
The Federal Trade Commission explains the platform reporting requirement and accepts complaints about noncompliance at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. The law is U.S. federal law; rights and procedures elsewhere differ. Questions involving satire, journalism, research, evidence or other lawful uses can raise distinct legal issues, so a person facing a specific case may need legal advice.

If an intimate image or video is posted without consent
- Preserve useful evidence. Record the page URL, account name, date and time, and relevant platform notices. Save screenshots where safe and lawful. Avoid repeatedly downloading or forwarding explicit material; if a minor may be involved, do not copy, share or link to it.
- Use the platform’s nonconsensual-intimate-media reporting route. On Reddit, use its reporting tools and consult its TAKE IT DOWN Act information page. A specific NCII route is preferable to assuming a generic abuse or copyright form will do the job.
- Escalate covered-platform failures. If a platform subject to the Act does not meet its obligations, the FTC says a complaint can be filed at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. This route does not guarantee removal from every service or copy.
- Consider hash-based protection if eligible. StopNCII creates hashes of intimate images on a user’s device so participating platforms can look for matching copies without the original image being uploaded to the service. Check its current eligibility rules and participating platforms before relying on it; matching tools may not catch substantially altered or newly generated variants.
- Get help for threats or immediate danger. For extortion, stalking, threats or cases involving minors, consider contacting law enforcement and a qualified lawyer or victim-support service. Do not negotiate with blackmailers or pay sextortion demands without professional advice.
A takedown can be important, but copies may remain in comments, archives, image hosts or private groups, and a removed post can be reposted. Keep records of reports and follow up on other known locations without amplifying the material.

Why the problem outlasted the original subreddit
Deepfake pornography has moved from a niche Reddit label into a wider category of image-based sexual abuse. Tools now encompass still images, video and audio, and the targets are not limited to public figures. A 2026 research paper describes the problem as resilient to platform and regulatory interventions. That is a reason to distinguish disruption from eradication: a ban or law can provide leverage and reduce access in particular places without removing the underlying ability to make, repost or host abusive material.
Detection and removal also involve trade-offs. Automated classifiers can handle volume but may miss new techniques or flag legitimate material. Hash matching can help identify known copies, yet altered crops, recompressed files and new generations can evade it. Provenance labels may help establish the history of some media, but the absence of a label does not prove authenticity. Takedown systems must also weigh the need to remove abuse against mistakes that suppress lawful documentation or reporting.
The 2018 story was therefore more than a novelty about celebrity impersonation. It exposed how public images, low-friction publishing and synthetic media could turn someone’s identity into sexual content without consent. The legal response is stronger in the United States than it was then, but the central practical challenge remains: protecting the person depicted while limiting the ability of copies to travel faster than remedies can reach them.
