In April 2019, a Seattle group of friends said their free Game of Thrones fantasy-league app had drawn about 55,000 players during the show’s final season. The figure, reported by GeekWire, was a striking jump from roughly 10,000 users the team reported for the previous season. It was a snapshot from 2019—not a verified count of active users today.
A fantasy league for television viewers
Throne Fantasy turned watching Game of Thrones into a social competition. Players drafted characters, joined or created private leagues, then earned points for events in each episode. Friends could compare their teams and standings as the story unfolded.
The idea came from Daniel Gorrie, who had tried another fantasy-league app for the show and disliked the experience. Before season seven, he built a version for himself and his friends. The project expanded beyond that initial circle, according to the 2019 GeekWire report.

They were described as friends from Seattle’s technology community. Gorrie had worked as a software engineer at Pioneer Square Labs and was preparing to join Stripe when interviewed. Maaland’s personal biography also describes the project as attracting 55,000 active users, but that is a self-reported account, not an independent measurement.

Draft characters, score episode events
Scoring reflected the show’s plot, not just conventional sports statistics. GeekWire listed kills, dialogue, sex scenes, deception, pregnancy and acquiring a dragon among the events that could earn points. In one example, acquiring a dragon was worth 2,000 points.
That example is not a complete scoring table. The available reporting does not specify every event’s value, roster limits, tie-breakers or league settings. The basic appeal was simpler: choose characters, watch the episode, and see whether their actions moved your team ahead of friends’ teams.
The app’s design helped give the game a distinct identity. Freistadt created hand-drawn character illustrations, while the founders emphasized clear rules and a polished mobile experience. Custom artwork made the product feel tailored to the fandom rather than like a bare spreadsheet of predictions.

The scores were not automatic
Behind the quick post-episode standings was a manual process. The team watched episodes when they aired, then rewatched scenes, paused to capture screenshots, decided which scoring events had occurred and updated the results. The founders told GeekWire they could have standings ready as early as about 9:30 p.m. Pacific Time on Sunday nights.
That human review was both a feature and a constraint. Narrative events can be ambiguous, and the team sometimes debated calls among themselves. Users also challenged decisions through Facebook. Was a line actually a joke? Had Jon Snow “acquired” a dragon by riding one? Those questions show how a scoring rule that sounds clear in the abstract can become contentious in a specific scene.
Human judgment can make a fandom game more playful and responsive than rigid automated rules. But when points determine a league winner, disputed calls can erode confidence. Clear definitions, examples for borderline cases, and a visible way to explain or appeal a decision would help. The reporting does not establish whether the app had a formal appeals process.

Why it found an audience
The team said the app grew organically, without paid promotion. GeekWire reported about 10,000 users during the prior season and about 55,000 players during season eight, the show’s final season. Gorrie also said it reached No. 8 in Android trending and as high as No. 37 in the iOS entertainment rankings at points during its run. Those are reported figures and peaks, not evidence of sustained rankings or independently audited usage.
The product’s format offered several plausible reasons for its appeal. Game of Thrones supplied a large, highly engaged audience; a weekly episode created a recurring moment to return; and private leagues gave viewers a reason to invite friends. Fantasy scoring could also make minor plot details newly consequential. These are explanations suggested by the product design, not measured causes of its growth.
There were practical limits, too. A Sunday-night scoring cadence could spoil an episode for someone watching later, and international viewers did not necessarily share the same release time. Late joiners reportedly faced a penalty, a way to account for missed episodes that could also make it harder for newcomers to catch up. Manual review was manageable for a small group but would become more demanding as participation grew.

What the 55,000 figure does—and does not—say
The headline number was an approximate player count attributed to the founders and published in April 2019. The reporting does not define whether “players” means downloads, registered accounts, people active in a particular episode, or everyone who participated over the season. It also gives no retention figures, revenue, conversion rates, geographic breakdown or infrastructure costs.
The app was described as free. No verified monetization model, funding or profitability is documented in the available coverage. Nor does the fact that HBO employees in New York and Seattle were reportedly playing establish an HBO partnership, license, endorsement or promotion. Employee interest and formal cooperation are different claims.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBecause the app used characters and concepts from a major entertainment property, licensing and platform-policy questions are relevant to any account of its operating model. The available sources do not establish what arrangements, if any, existed; they do not support a conclusion about the app’s legal status.

After the show’s final season
Game of Thrones ended with its eighth season in May 2019, removing the weekly episodes around which the game was built. GeekWire linked to Apple and Google Play listings at the time. Those historical links do not establish present availability: the Google Play URL is no longer a reliable sign that the app can be downloaded, while the historical App Store listing likewise should not be taken as proof of current operation.
The official Throne Fantasy domain still resolves to a JavaScript application shell, but a reachable web address alone does not show that the service is functioning, supported or actively used. The available evidence does not establish the app’s current user base, ownership, revenue or operational status.
Throne Fantasy illustrates a useful product pattern: a small, polished companion app can turn passive viewing into a recurring social game when it fits a popular show’s release rhythm. Its reported reach depended on more than an app-store listing: friends brought friends, and the team supplied the labor of translating story moments into timely scores. That same dependence on a single series and its finite run made the product’s future difficult to separate from the show itself.
