How a 1970s Card Deck Anticipated AI’s Creative Power

The “analog deck” was a deck of cards, not a tape recorder. In 1975, Brian Eno and artist Peter Schmidt created Oblique Strategies, a collection of short instructions meant to unsettle familiar creative habits. It did not predict modern artificial intelligence. It anticipated a creative method that matters in the age of AI: set a constraint, invite an unexpected response, then use human judgment to decide what is worth keeping.

What was the analog deck?

Oblique Strategies is a physical card deck created by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt in 1975. The word “deck” can suggest recording equipment, especially in a story about Eno, a musician and producer. Here it means cards: each offers a compact instruction for someone who feels stuck or caught in a habitual way of working. The deck’s history and its connection to AI prompting are discussed in VentureBeat’s account of Eno’s creative methods.

Instructions cited in that account include “Use an unacceptable color,” “Only one element of each kind,” and “Honor thy error as a hidden intention.” These are examples, not a guarantee of wording across every edition or reproduction. The official Oblique Strategies site continues the format online, presenting a single instruction—in the captured page, “Decorate, decorate.”

Why use an instruction to get unstuck?

A creative block is not always a shortage of effort or technical skill. Sometimes the problem is the frame: the maker keeps reaching for the same solution, refining the same idea, or treating the brief as if it permits only one path. A small outside constraint can make another path visible.

An Oblique Strategy does not supply a finished composition or tell the artist exactly what to make. Its deliberately open wording asks the artist to interpret it in the context of the work at hand. “Remove ambiguities and convert to specifics,” for instance, could prompt a writer to make a vague scene concrete; “Give way to your worst impulse” could invite a musician to try a deliberately excessive sound. The instruction changes the next decision, not the whole work.

That is the deck’s useful disturbance: it interrupts the loop of familiar choices without replacing the maker’s judgment. Chance enters through which instruction appears and how the artist interprets it. The creator remains responsible for deciding whether the result moves the work forward.

How does that connect to AI prompting?

A prompt can play a similar role in a generative workflow. It establishes a frame or constraint; a model produces candidate text, images, audio, or other outputs; the user evaluates, revises, rejects, or develops them. In both cases, an instruction can open possibilities without specifying every detail in advance.

Oblique Strategies AI prompting
A brief instruction is interpreted by a person. A text, image, audio, or multimodal input conditions a generative model.
The instruction changes how the artist approaches the work. The prompt shapes which kinds of outputs the model is likely to produce.
The card does not make the artwork. The prompt does not guarantee a finished or usable result.
Ambiguity leaves room for human interpretation. A prompt can be ambiguous or highly specific, with different effects on the output.
The artist judges what to do with the instruction. The user judges, edits, checks, and iterates on generated candidates.

The connection is procedural, not mechanical. A card addresses a human mind; an AI prompt is input to a trained computational model. It is inaccurate to equate a card draw with model inference or to describe the model as interpreting language in the same experiential sense as a person. The useful overlap is indirection: the creator sets conditions, sees what follows, and responds.

That is why prompting can be a powerful creative tool without being a magic formula. A prompt helps foreground a subject, audience, style, or constraint, but outcomes also depend on the model, its training, the context and tools available, and the user’s iteration. No prompt guarantees accuracy, originality, artistic value, or freedom from derivative or legally problematic material. Taste, subject knowledge, editing, and verification still matter.

What does it mean to honor an error?

“Honor thy error as a hidden intention” captures the deck’s most memorable creative move: reconsider an apparent mistake before discarding it. The process can be simple:

  1. An unexpected result appears.
  2. The maker notices the impulse to label it a failure.
  3. The maker asks whether it might serve the work in an unplanned way.
  4. If it does, the work changes direction; if it does not, the result can still be rejected.

VentureBeat’s account associates this instruction with a recording session for David Bowie’s Low, in which an unwanted synthesizer result was reportedly kept after being reconsidered as useful. That anecdote is best treated as an account of the session rather than as independently established session documentation. Its point is not that every error should be preserved; it is that a surprise can be evaluated as material rather than automatically erased.

The same habit can help when a generative system returns an odd phrase, composition, or image. Surprise alone is not quality. The creator must determine whether the accident reveals a more interesting direction, and then shape it deliberately.

From composing every detail to designing conditions

Eno’s creative practice is often discussed in terms of systems, rules, and conditions that allow events to unfold. That offers a vocabulary for thinking about generative work: instead of deciding every detail in advance, a creator may establish a situation, observe what emerges, and make choices about what to keep. This is a useful way to describe constrained emergence, not a claim that Eno invented generative art or foresaw neural networks.

Tape-loop processes provide a related analogy. As VentureBeat describes them, loops of different lengths can drift in and out of sync, creating evolving textures from relatively simple materials and rules. The artist sets up the conditions but does not manually choose every later alignment. This is not AI: it is a designed process whose changing interaction can produce emergent patterns. “Designed randomness” means the creator chooses the system and its parameters; actual randomness means a process includes random events or noise; emergence describes patterns arising through interactions among parts. Those ideas may illuminate generative workflows, but tape-loop phasing is not a technical ancestor of a neural model.

Why the creator still matters

Generative systems can make the creator’s role in framing and selection more visible, but they do not make the human irrelevant. The user still defines what the work is trying to do, identifies what is clichéd or off-brief, checks claims, decides what to discard, and determines how much of the generated material belongs in the result. A finished work may involve a prompt writer, an editor, a source-material provider, a model developer, and others; the analogy to Eno’s cards does not settle who deserves authorship or credit.

A card deck is small, human-authored, legible, and mechanically transparent. A contemporary model is shaped by training data, infrastructure, architecture, product policies, and commercial incentives, and may be opaque to its users. Calling both systems “prompting” can illuminate the role of constraints while concealing those differences. Eno anticipated a creative posture—setting conditions and responding to outcomes—not the engineering of modern AI.

Try the method with a creative brief

Use this exercise with writing, music, design, or an AI assistant. The aim is not to produce the perfect instruction; it is to discover whether a constraint changes the work productively.

  1. Write the creative problem in one sentence.
  2. Choose one outside constraint, such as “remove the obvious central element,” “rewrite it for an unexpected audience,” or “keep one apparent mistake.”
  3. Generate three materially different responses, by hand, with an AI tool, or both.
  4. Choose the response that changes the problem most productively, not simply the strangest one.
  5. Revise it deliberately; do not treat the first surprising result as finished.
  6. Keep track of which decisions you made and which material came from the system.

This is the sharper lesson in the Eno analogy. A useful prompt need not be a perfectly engineered command. It can be a well-chosen disturbance—one that expands the available choices and leaves the creator with the work of recognizing which choice matters.
