3 Body Problem’s Panama Canal massacre in Episode 5, “Judgment Day,” was made with a hybrid approach: the production built key sections of the tanker and practical wreckage, then used visual effects to complete the most graphic moments. The sequence’s central idea is a fixed web of invisible fibers that the ship moves through—a mechanism the filmmakers planned with scientific advice and revealed in stages.
How the fibers work in the scene
The ship’s destruction is staged as a consequence of moving through stationary, nearly invisible fibers. Science consultant Dr. Matt Kenzie explained that a real experiment would keep the fibers still and move the object through them. Director Minkie Spiro said preparation lasted months and began with the science. Netflix Tudum’s Episode 5 recap describes how that logic informed the sequence.
The fibers are not plainly visible in the final image. Instead, the audience reads their position from what they do to the ship and the people aboard it. Production designer Deborah Riley told Awards Radar that the team considered the tanker’s movement and how the cut sections would remain together until the vessel stopped.
What the production built
The filmmakers constructed important parts of the tanker rather than creating the whole setting digitally. Riley described a tanker deck, executive corridor, public corridor, cafeteria, and school spaces. The deck was built in the car park at Shepperton Studios, according to MovieMaker’s 2024 account. Those physical environments gave the cast and camera tangible spaces to work in; they do not establish that every ship or canal shot was filmed there.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Practical wreckage made the cuts legible
For the mangled ship sections, Riley and construction manager Keith Perry used neoprene strips attached to a simple rig. The strips could be pushed, pulled, and angled to suggest metal and structure torn apart by the invisible web. Netflix’s recap describes this practical setup, while MovieMaker reports that the fiber strands were spaced at 50-centimeter intervals from the water’s surface to the tanker deck. That figure describes the spacing reported in that account, not a general measurement of the effect.
Visual effects completed the massacre
The physical staging established how the fibers worked, but the most graphic images were completed digitally. Netflix says the massacred people were added later. MovieMaker reports that actors were scanned and replaced with digital humans after being cut. The result combines the tactile detail of sets and practical materials with digital people and other visual-effects work; the production accounts do not support describing the entire ship as a practical build.

Why the destruction unfolds in stages
The scene gives viewers clues before showing the full consequence. The production team coordinated direction, design, cinematography, visual effects, and scientific advice to make the mechanism understandable without making the fibers themselves visible. Riley said the sequence was broken into stages so viewers could follow what was happening. In Netflix’s recap, Spiro’s account of the months of preparation and Kenzie’s explanation of the fixed-fiber experiment help explain why the ship moves through the danger rather than the other way around.
The balance was also visual: the physical clues needed to communicate the threat, while the effects supplied the impossible, devastating result. Cinematographer Martin Ahlgren said an initially more graphic beat was scaled back, as discussed in The Credits’ interview.

Was the Panama bar filmed in Panama?
The bar scene was filmed on a London soundstage, dressed with palm trees and plants to suggest humid, ominous conditions. Ahlgren described the set in his interview with The Credits. That account establishes the setting for the bar, not the filming location of every canal or tanker shot; the cited production interviews do not establish that the canal sequence was filmed at the Panama Canal.

- Practical construction: built tanker spaces and manipulable neoprene strips supplied real surfaces, shapes, and movement.
- Digital completion: visual effects added digital human imagery and completed the massacre’s most graphic results.
- Controlled revelation: the fibers stay largely unseen, while the ship’s damage lets viewers infer their path.
Together, those choices made an abstract threat readable as a physical event. The production accounts describe a planned combination of sets, practical wreckage, performance, and visual effects—not an all-digital ship or a claim that every shot was made on location.
