Within that broad placement, the first season’s dates are partly reconstructed from on-screen title cards, dialogue and production commentary—not published as a single official HBO episode-by-episode timeline. The episode chronology below separates the date shown on screen from dates inferred from the story.
How far before Game of Thrones is House of the Dragon?
HBO’s official description places House of the Dragon 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. That is the reliable franchise-level answer, not a precise calendar conversion for every episode. HBO’s official series description and series announcement establish the broad premise.
The show’s dates use AC, short for After Aegon’s Conquest, the dating convention used in Westeros. The season’s more specific placements are an independent chronology’s interpretation of clues in the episodes. They are useful for following the jumps, but should not be mistaken for an official HBO master timeline or a claim that the adaptation follows every date in Fire & Blood.

What is confirmed, and what is reconstructed?

- The series is based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.
- HBO places it 200 years before Game of Thrones.
Inferred from episode evidence
- The main story in episode 1 is dated 112 AC by an independent chronology, not by an HBO episode-by-episode timeline.
- Later season-one dates combine dialogue, title-card information, ages and production commentary. Some placements are approximate.
That distinction matters because the television series adapts, rather than simply reproduces, its source. Martin describes Fire & Blood as “imaginary history,” not a conventional novel. In his author’s note about the book, he stresses the history-like form. The show can streamline, rearrange or reinterpret details; a book date is not automatically proof of the date used in a scene. Why the story jumps between years
Season 1 covers years of Targaryen history rather than one uninterrupted stretch of time. The early episodes establish Viserys’s reign and the events around his family; later episodes move the story forward, including the large jump from the younger cast to the older cast. The dates in the table help orient the viewer, but the show does not provide a precise date for every scene.

For a quick orientation, remember the firm prologue date of 101 AC, then treat 112 AC as the reconstructed start of the main story. The later years—115, 116, 126 and 132 AC—are the independent chronology’s placements, with the qualifications above.

Where the source book fits
Fire & Blood is the source book HBO identifies for the series, but it is a fictional history rather than a scene-by-scene viewing guide. The HBO tie-in edition listing identifies a Random House Worlds edition with ISBN 9780593598009, published July 12, 2022, at 752 pages. Edition details and availability can vary by marketplace.

Current streaming availability
HBO Max’s US support page reports that season 3 premiered June 21, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET, and that seasons 1 and 2 are available on HBO Max. It also lists 4K UHD, HDR10 or Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos on select devices with the Premium plan. These catalog and format details are US-specific and may change.
