What season 3 is about
Grief turns into a political force
Spoilers: GamesRadar’s recap says the season opens with the Battle of the Gullet, where Jacaerys Velaryon and his dragon, Vermax, die. The loss leaves Rhaenyra grieving, but it does not pause the struggle for power: she moves toward taking King’s Landing while facing financial hardship, rival claims, captivity, and the surviving Greens. GamesRadar’s recap.
#1 Best Overall
That pairing of personal loss and political ambition gives the season its defining tension. Rhaenyra’s choices are shaped by mourning, yet the war demands action. As the recap describes further family conflict and deteriorating political decisions, the question is not simply who can win a battle, but what kind of rule can emerge from a conflict that keeps deepening its costs. GamesRadar’s recap.
Fire and fury, with the politics still in view
The battles promise the scale suggested by the series’ dragons and civil war, but spectacle is only one measure of the season. Its other appeal is the ensemble: HBO’s announced cast includes Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, and others. House of the Dragon season 3 reviews: character drama versus battle spectacle
Reception depends on what a viewer wants from the series. Tom Power’s TechRadar review, published June 18, 2026, covered the first four episodes then available to press—not the completed season. He praised the returning cast, new additions, dramatic storytelling, and especially episode three. He also argued that the action needed to improve and that the Battle of the Gullet did not fully land. That is an early-season critical assessment, not a verdict on every episode or every viewer’s experience. Tom Power’s TechRadar review.
Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 91% Tomatometer from 174 reviews and a 65% Popcornmeter from 1,000+ ratings when accessed in 2026. The two figures represent separate critic and audience measures, and both can change as more reviews or ratings are counted; they are a dated platform snapshot, not a permanent consensus. For a viewer, the practical distinction is whether the political and emotional fallout is as compelling as the battles: the early review highlights the former while questioning the latter, and the aggregator snapshot shows a wider gap between its critic and audience scores.

The book behind House of the Dragon
George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood is the source book for the series and a useful companion for viewers interested in the Targaryen history behind the drama. The adaptation should not be treated as a scene-for-scene reproduction of the book. HBO identifies the series as based on Fire & Blood. HBO/WBD.
