House of the Dragon Season 3 premiered in the United States on June 21, 2026. Before its debut, cast members and showrunner Ryan Condal spoke about the Battle of the Gullet, the demands of filming it, and what the conflict means for the characters. Later, actor Benjamin Evan Ainsworth discussed Daeron’s rising stakes at Tumbleton. Their comments offer perspectives on the season—not a guarantee of what happens beyond what they chose to share.
What did the cast say about the Battle of the Gullet?
In a TV Insider interview published June 10, 2026, Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon), Abubakar Salim (Alyn of Hull), Bethany Antonia (Baela Targaryen), and Harry Collett (Jacaerys Velaryon) discussed the naval battle promoted as part of the Season 3 premiere. Their emphasis was not just on the scale of the action, but on its unpredictability and cost.
- Antonia said viewers would be happy with the route the battle takes.
- Salim focused on its disorder: “The one thing that is the constant is the chaos of it.”
- Collett summed up its importance this way: “It changes a lot, full stop.”
Their comments frame the Gullet as a turning point experienced by people trying to survive, rather than spectacle detached from its consequences. Condal likewise described it as a major event while making clear it was not the season’s only large-scale action: “This is by far our most action-packed season. The Gullet is huge… but it is only the beginning,” he told TV Insider.
How were the sea and dragon scenes filmed?
The actors described a production that combined practical movement and visual effects, with performers sometimes filming separately from the action they were meant to encounter.

Ships in tanks
TV Insider reported that the ship sequences used functional boats floating in two large tanks. Condal described a wet tank and a dry tank, with gimbals moving the ships to simulate rough water. Salim compared the experience of filming aboard the moving vessels to being on a theme-park ride.
Dragon riders filmed apart from the ships
Antonia and Collett filmed dragon-riding scenes on a Volume set, separate from the performers aboard the ships. Director Loni Peristere helped them imagine the battle unfolding below. In a CinemaBlend interview published June 22, Antonia also described using an iPad that showed an in-progress version of the visual effects, helping the riders see what their characters were facing.

Stunts and scale
TV Insider reported that at the show’s SXSW London panel on June 5, 2026, the production described igniting 23 stunt performers in one take. That is the outlet’s reported figure; it should not be read as an independently verified world record.
What did Ryan Condal say about the season’s story?
In a GamesRadar+ interview published June 19, 2026, co-creator and showrunner Ryan Condal discussed moving the Battle of the Gullet from the end of Season 2 to the beginning of Season 3. He said the production brought together naval combat, dragons, and medieval close fighting, and spoke about the choices involved in adapting George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, a history that leaves room for interpretation.

Condal also described Rhaenyra’s story as a developing journey toward deciding what kind of sovereign she will be. That is a thematic description from the showrunner, not a detailed account of her eventual choices.
What did Benjamin Evan Ainsworth reveal later in the season?
Ainsworth, who plays Daeron Targaryen, spoke to GamesRadar+ on July 27, 2026, during the season’s run. His comments are later-season context, not a pre-premiere tease. He described Daeron’s position escalating from squire to being presented as king, including a coin bearing his face and an assassination attempt. With Tumbleton becoming hostile, Ainsworth framed Daeron’s predicament around whether he would follow his moral compass.
“I think every episode, at least for my character, the stakes are raising tremendously,” he said.

HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery announced an eight-episode season produced in the United Kingdom. The official trailer announcement gave the U.S. premiere as Sunday, June 21, 2026, at 9:00 p.m. That schedule is specific to the United States; regional release dates and platform schedules can differ. HBO describes the series as based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood and set 200 years before Game of Thrones. The book offers source material beyond the events adapted on screen, so reading it may reveal later story developments.
