Spoilers for House of the Dragon Seasons 1 and 2. Rhaenyra’s relationships with Daemon and Ser Criston Cole unfold in separate events. In Season 1, Episode 5, Criston confesses that he slept with Rhaenyra after mistaking Queen Alicent’s question for an inquiry about himself. Alicent had suspected Daemon was involved in Rhaenyra’s night out in Episode 4, but that suspicion is not the same revelation. The show later makes Rhaenyra and Daemon’s sexual relationship explicit in Episode 7, and they marry.
What happened between Rhaenyra and Daemon in Season 1, Episode 4?
Rhaenyra goes out in King’s Landing with her uncle Daemon. Alicent later believes Rhaenyra had sex that night and suspects Daemon was involved. That is Alicent’s interpretation—not a confirmed account of what happened between Rhaenyra and Daemon during the outing. The episode recaps do not settle the details of that night.
A separate scene often associated with this period shows Ser Criston protecting Rhaenyra during a boar hunt. HBO Max’s official clip illustrates their protector-and-princess dynamic; it does not establish that they had sex.
Did Rhaenyra sleep with Daemon or Criston Cole?
Criston’s confession in Episode 5
In Season 1, Episode 5, Alicent questions Criston about Rhaenyra’s absence. He assumes she means his own involvement and confesses that he slept with the princess. The episode’s recaps identify this as the confirmed sexual relationship revealed in that conversation. (TV Guide; The Washington Post)

Rhaenyra and Daemon at Driftmark
The show later makes Rhaenyra and Daemon’s relationship explicit in Season 1, Episode 7. At Driftmark, they talk about her marriage to Laenor, kiss, and have sex. They later marry. The episode reveals that Laenor’s apparent death was part of a scheme and that he escaped alive with Qarl. (TV Guide)
Why does Criston ask Rhaenyra to leave with him?
After sleeping with Rhaenyra, Criston asks her to leave court and marry him for love. Rhaenyra refuses to abandon her position and obligations. She proposes that they could continue seeing each other within her understanding with Laenor, whom she is due to marry. Criston rejects the prospect of being her secret lover and leaves hurt. His confession to Alicent follows this painful rupture.

How are the three relationships different?
| Relationship | What the show establishes | What to avoid conflating |
|---|---|---|
| Rhaenyra and Criston | Criston confesses in Episode 5 that he slept with Rhaenyra; he wants to leave court and marry her, but she will not give up her political role. | This is not what Alicent initially suspects about Rhaenyra’s Episode 4 outing with Daemon. |
| Rhaenyra and Daemon | They kiss and have sex at Driftmark in Episode 7, and later marry. | The exact events of their Episode 4 night out are not established by the episode recaps. |
Does Rhaenyra and Daemon’s marriage resolve their conflict?
No. In Season 2, Episode 2, Rhaenyra suspects Daemon’s involvement in Prince Jaehaerys’s murder and accuses him of wanting power for himself. Coverage of the argument describes it as bringing older, unresolved wounds in their relationship to the surface. Their marriage does not remove the underlying struggle over trust and power. (TVLine)
