The parallel story at Harrenhal shows that Daemon’s allies also expect him to answer for the violence committed in his name.
“The Red Sowing” aired July 28, 2024, and runs 64 minutes, according to TV Guide’s episode listing.
Seasmoke chooses Addam, opening a new path
On Driftmark, Rhaenyra finds Addam of Hull with Seasmoke. The dragon has chosen a new rider, and Addam pledges fealty to her. Their encounter does not resolve Addam’s family connection to Corlys; its importance is what it shows Rhaenyra: the pool of potential dragonriders may extend beyond the noble families she first considered.
Rhaenyra’s recruitment plan puts Jace’s position at risk
Mysaria urges Rhaenyra to search King’s Landing’s smallfolk for dragonseeds: people with Targaryen or Valyrian ancestry, including bastards. Recruiting among noble houses would preserve familiar lines of status, but offer a narrower pool. Turning to the smallfolk broadens Rhaenyra’s military options while challenging the hierarchy that gives her court its shape.

Jacaerys objects for more than political reasons. His own parentage is vulnerable to questions, and dragonriding helps support his standing as Rhaenyra’s heir. If bastards can gain power and status through dragons, the same principle could weaken the distinction on which Jace’s claim depends. The plan that may strengthen his mother’s war effort therefore unsettles his place in the succession.
Hugh and Ulf approach the risk differently
Hugh enters the effort with his family’s future in mind. After the death of his daughter, he hopes that claiming a dragon can secure a better life for those he has left. Ulf, by contrast, has boasted about his supposed Targaryen heritage but is hesitant when the danger becomes immediate. The candidates are not a uniform group of eager heroes: they have different reasons for coming, and different reactions when they face the dragons.

Oscar Tully makes Daemon answer for the Riverlands
At Harrenhal, young Oscar Tully confronts Daemon over the violence carried out in the Riverlands under his influence. He demands an accounting and justice, making clear that the riverlords are not simply a force Daemon can command without consequences. Daemon executes Willem Blackwood. The act addresses Oscar’s demand, but it also exposes the cost of Daemon’s alliance-building: he needs the riverlords’ support and must reckon with what has been done in their lands.
Vermithor and Silverwing turn recruitment into a deadly ordeal
Rhaenyra’s attempt to find riders is no safe audition. Vermithor attacks the assembled candidates, killing many. In the chaos, Hugh steps forward and stands before the dragon. Vermithor accepts him as his rider.

Ulf survives the upheaval and claims Silverwing. He takes flight and eventually appears over King’s Landing. The two claims give Rhaenyra’s side new dragonriders, but the episode makes clear that finding them has cost lives—and that the people she has empowered come from outside the established circle of noble families.

When Ulf flies over King’s Landing, Aemond pursues him on Vhagar. Near Dragonstone, Aemond sees Rhaenyra with Syrax, Vermithor and Silverwing. He turns back. The sight changes the immediate calculation: Rhaenyra’s side now has three dragons gathered, enough to make an attack less straightforward. It is a moment of deterrence, not an end to the war.
